Hi all!
I have a Chantecleur hen that's a year or older laying double-yolkers.
Sidenote;
I bought four Chant hens and I'm unsure which is the one laying the Dy's, but I'm sure it's safe to assume it's the younger ones which were spring hatch last year (2019).
In Nov/December of last year I...
Ok so I've been trying to keep my females seperate with my male and it's just not working. The ladies are escape artists and the ducklings hurt themselves trying to get to the moms.
So I guess my next step is trying to introduce a few more females. Is this advisable? IF I get a couple more...
I only keep a personal flock and I've got my breeding done for the year. Normally all of my ducks free range on my acreage. But this year I started expanding because of how useful they are keeping down pests.
In the end I'm looking to get about a dozen ducks, so right now I'm open to getting a...
How much older though? When they're 4 or 5 months? Or older? I dont want to do it too soon.
And that leaves my male alone in the mean time. Should I rotate my 2 females in his enclosure?
I'm not trying to get the ducklings bred.
The male seems to treat them as interlopers and tries to hurt or drive them away.
I've already separated them so they are stress free. I have plenty of room to give them their own space.
Now I'm trying to find information on what the next step is to...
They don't protect them from the male, and I can get near them all. The ducklings are bigger than the moms now, and mostly the same size as the male.
And I could keep any new females seperate with the male in his enclosure if need be. What's usually a good sign that the moms aren't protecting...
Ok, it's easy enough to keep them seperate. Right now I'm keeping the females and ducklings together(the moms dont like being separated from them). But I really hate leaving the male on his own.
They were fine as a trio until the ducklings hatched, and I've had a hell of a time finding either...
I've been having an issue with my male Runner being aggressive with his ducklings. One of the ducklings is crested so I'm really concerned about that one being hurt.
What I am wondering is if half the problem is that he doesnt have enough females. I currently have 2 adult females and 4...
Considering how chill my male was when I introduced 2 females in January, I'm definitely thinking it's hormones. During the day I can just let the rest out and leave the male inside. Ive just been hesitant because everything I read said he should be able to see them. But the mother doesnt seem...
If all its gonna take is time, that's fine. I dont mind putting in the effort. I just wanted to make sure there wasnt some little trick I didnt know about lol
I'm hoping it'll go easier now too. The lone duckling has stayed in the house at night. My prego self has a hard time cleaning up the poop now. So i really hope it gets along with the rest soon. We spend all day outside any way, so I'm hoping that helps things along too.
You're probably right there. I collected all of the eggs before the mom sat on them, because some were left in the cold or were frozen when I found them. So I tried to use the ones that seemed most viable from a period of 2 weeks. So ya, who knows lol
