We came home this afternoon and the hen had moved her chicks to a corner of the coop and left the remaining eggs. They were cold and when I candled them I couldn't see anything promising so we opened them. Both were just yolk so I'm assuming unfertilized or stopped early on anyway. No blood...
We have four eggs under a brood hen (we didn't want too many on our first try). Two eggs were 21 days Friday, the other two are a day later. One chick hatched Friday, one Saturday. No external pips in the other two eggs that I can see. I haven't candled this time (last time we tried this I...
Thank you. The chick started doing a lot better on the heating pad - moving around and cheeping when before we could barely even see it breathe. We put it under the hen because I figure she'll do a better job of regulating it's temperature than we can (it was not under her before - I found the...
We are having our first hatch with a broody. Yesterday we had one healthy, vibrant chick hatch out. Last night I noticed another egg was starting to pip. When I went out this morning I thought the chick was dead (the first one is still fine and running around). It's still breathing but it's...
Any guesses on our three 5 week old chicks, or is it too early?
Chick #1
Chick #2
Chick #3
I'm suspecting #1 might be a roo? They aren't normally in the sandbox - it was just an easy place to take pictures.
In the middle of the night last night we heard some horrible animal screams outside the window. It only lasted a couple seconds so I figured maybe it was cats fighting or something. This morning we found one of our chickens dead outside. I didn't count when I shut them in the coop last night...
I don't see red wattles - the comb is definitely pinker than our other chicks though and much bigger. Is that just the breed? This chick also hates to be held and fights to be free. That's another reason I was suspecting roo.
We have four chicks that are about 5 weeks old - one Easter Egger, one Black Australorp, and two Cuckoo Marans. They were all supposed to be pullets. The Easter Egger I'm pretty sure is a pullet because of her coloring, the Australorp I'm pretty sure is a roo because of comb and attitude, but...
