This post was nearly a year ago but I just figured I'd update it for anybody who finds it, she's still fine. It never happened again. But I never figured out what happened in the first place either
I think I was able to figure out what was going on. He made a nest for her, she was trying to lay an egg in it, and he was standing over her while she did it protectively. Just never seen him do that before.
One of my chickens got attacked by a possum about 3 weeks ago. He ripped her stomach open and I really did not expect her to survive. We've been keeping a careful eye on it, bathing her to wash the wound, and keeping her sprayed with blue-kote. She has proven to be remarkably resilient so far...
I wanted to add that I saw him in this exact spot previously alone, looking like he was "nesting" then he was here with the hen standing over her while she sat in it. Today I went outside and found an egg in that spot, so I'm coming to the conclusion that he built a nest for her and then was...
So so sometimes we catch my rooster Edward sitting on one of his hens. It's very reminiscent of a mother hen protecting babies. It's not mating behavior; at least not like any I've ever seen before. He just stands over her protectively and looks around, and she huddles up and lays on the ground...
Thank you for the advice. I kept her overnight in my house to help with possible heat related issues. After an hour or 2 she pretty much returned to normal and started drinking water. We put her back outside today and so far she's acting like nothing ever happened. Idk.
My girls have been free ranging today. I went this evening and found one sitting on the ground alone looking confused while everyone else has already went to bed. She looks dazed. Shes mildly responsive but not herself. Her head and neck keeps cocking to the right almost like it's stuck. Her...
Well, I usually start with removing the previous scab, then if there is already an open hole underneath, great. But a lot of the time their feet will heal SUPER fast and I have to make a new cut underneath the scab because the old hole is either too small or closed up.
I agree with most of what you said, but I will say I don't think chickens drinking the bath water is a concern, as don't chickens pretty much refuse to drink warm water? (I've read that in articles about risk of dehydration in the summer if the water gets too warm)
The water is about 2-3 inches deep.
That particular chicken got a little wetter than normal because she tried to escape and splashed water on herself. She wasn't soaked tho.
The other hen I tried it on just sat in there quietly the whole time, and she only had a slightly wet bum. Drying them off...
Here are some photos of my tub set up, and one of the hens wrapped up. The hen is an Easter egger. So medium sized. I think this set up would still leave plenty of room for a larger chicken too.
As far as Epsom salt, I never measured how much I used. I just put a lot, until the water couldn't...
Hey folks. So bumblefoot is one ailment I've always struggled to treat within my flock, and I've never been able to find a way to do it successfully after many difficult (and mildly traumatic attempts) but finally, I've discovered the secret. A, dare I say it, EASY way! I've done this on 3 feet...
