Male Duck in need of new home in Clovis, New Mexico

Hello! I have a male duck (unsure of the breed) that is need of rehoming! He is about 3 months old. We love him very much but because he’s a male duck we can’t keep him since we have a lot of female chickens. He is skittish but not aggressive. We live in Clovis, New Mexico. If you are...

Do you need light in the coop at night?

I haven’t done anything with it and my chickens have been just fine. I guess that’s optional. Or, you could just set it for longer so it will work for both seasons.

Do you need light in the coop at night?

Well I’m not 100% sure how it works. But it turns on when my chickens start heading to the coop at sunset. It turns off after a certain amount of minutes (I’m not sure how many minutes probably 30) and there is an automatic timer. It is like the timers people will use for their Christmas lights.

Do you need light in the coop at night?

For mine, we have an automatic light that turns on when they go in so they can get situated. Then when they are all settled in they are fine. So, we only have a light on while they are going in.

    Leave Broody in the Coop?

I think you can go ahead and leave her in while they hatch, but move them to their own spot after they hatch. Also, if she is high up in the pecking order, that will help as well.

    Leave Broody in the Coop?

Hello! I too have a broody hen. What we are doing is we are going to keep her in the coop to incubate but when the chicks hatch, I am going to move her and her chicks to a new spot. You can set up a good spot for her before the chicks hatch. But, be sure to move her at night. So, if you want to...

Where to put a broody hen (with chicks)

Thanks! I actually have a duck and chicks I’m raising together, they get along really well. Lol. But, I haven’t ever tried hatching ducklings and chicks with a broody hen. Thanks for the warning! I’ll keep it in mind. I have a little pen that would be perfect for keeping the hen in but it’s...

    Recommendations for online chick buying?

We got our very first batch of chicks from Cackle Hatchery. We also got some chicks from Meyer Hatchery. I’d recommend those two hatcheries.

Speckled Sussex. About 10 weeks, tell me it’s not a roo

I also had a speckled sussex that we thought may have been a rooster. We have two speckled sussex and one of their combs was bigger and redder and her tail was longer. So, we suspected she may have been a rooster. She wasn’t thankfully.

Where to put a broody hen (with chicks)

So I have a broody hen and she is going to hatch chicks and ducklings. I’m not sure where to put her when she has the chicks and ducklings. Right now, she is just in the coop but that won’t work when the eggs hatch. I have a dog and I’m a bit worried that my dog could possibly hurt the chicks so...
