Has anyone crossed a Silver Spangled Hamburg (roo) with a Barred Rock hen? I couldn't find a pic anywhere but think that could be a good cross I could try. I'm just curious what the pattern would be...
The 5 chipmunk striped chicks are our 3 day old Black Copper Marans (dad) and Welsummer crosses. Interestingly, they are so much fluffier than our other chicks!
Ah, thanks! Looking at pics of partridge chantecler chicks, yes, I definitely see that. I could never find another chick that looked exactly like he did, with the speckles, chipmunk stripe, and no tail, but those are a match.
Wow, you may be right! I had not ever considered he could be a buckeye and I know nothing about that breed, but he certainly looks very similar to pictures online!
This is my original thread asking about his breed when he was a chick. It has a pic of him then of that is helpful.

I posted here several months ago asking for breed help when this guy (pretty sure he's a roo, now, anyway!) was a little chick. I try to post a link to that thread below if I can find it. Anyway, I got a lot of suggestions, and felt fairly confident he was a barnevelder. That's what he looked...
Thanks for both of your replies. We ended up moving them in last night and they appear to all be doing well today. Mama hen moved herself and chicks to a different nest area in a more secluded spot in the coop. This coop is a former horse barn. There's another coop right beside it, but my silkie...
I will try to post a pic tomorrow when it come out of the incubator, but I hatched an egg from an adult hen I purchased from someone. She was still fertilized from the previous owner's rooster. The mama hen is an Easter Egger and the rooster is a mix- his mom was half Blue Copper Marans (don't...
A month ago we bought 7 year old hens, and have been keeping them in a chicken tractor in quarantine. Now we are ready to move them into our coop with our head rooster and his 3 hens. Problem is, one of the 3 hens turned broody and just hatched out 8 chicks over the weekend and is in the same...
Interesting. Well that gives me hope that she can live to adulthoood, at least.
This morning my husband found one of our hen's chicks outside the coop and very cold, almost dead. He brought her in and I gave her sugar water and held her under a heat lamp, and now she's perked up and seems fine...
My Sussexes are all 4 weeks old, all supposed to be pullets, and none have a comb as large as your chick's! Nowhere near that size. That alone makes me think cockerel.
I bought 4 bantam cochins 3 weeks ago, and they should be about 4 weeks old now. One of them, whom I call Tiny, just isn't growing at he same rate as the others. Her sisters are twice as big as she is, and much more developed in general. She eats, drinks, and poops, and I've cleaned her vent...
I did some research last night, and now I'm convinced she's a barnevelder! A female barnevelder, because apparently the v-shape on her head tends to suggests female in that breed. The lack of tail feathers also makes sense, as barnevelders don't develop then until later. I'm excited! Thank you...
Now I want to go examine her comb to check! Unfortunately it will have to wait til tomorrow...I was just holding her today and didn't notice much of a comb at all, but I didn't move any fluff out of the way to check.
