Thanks for your input on Swansea. I appreciate it. CL sort of scares me, because of some bad stories I have heard. I realize that once given away, the birds may turn up on someone's plate (sad, but true). But I must get rid of them. The heritage Dominique is so gorgeous, I am sad to see him go...
Sorry, I meant the auction in Swansea. I was wondering if I brought by two roosters there to give away (not auction), if there were rules preventing me from doing so (like having to pay to be there). I apologize for the confusion.
Do you know if you can bring animals to the Swansea market, or do you need to buy a stall/table? I have two beautiful 17-week old roosters, organically raised and free ranging fellows who I must give away. Thought this might be a good place to try.
There is always a little risk, but if they have easy access to shelter, they should be ok. To train them to come when I called, I tossed cracked corn out and said "here chick chick chick" and they learned to come running. Now I don't have to toss anything (I still do pretty often). Don't want to...
We have a beautiful 17 week old Dominique that has begun to crow :(
Now we need to find a new home for him before my neighbors come for my head on a pike.
I am heartbroken. He is the prettiest bird in the flock.
I have never had to get rid of a bird before. Any ideas how to find a good home for...
I am curious -- in MA as well. Will the chickens stay warm in the winter with only sand? We use sweet PDZ, sand, and a layer of shavings. We layer the shavings to keep things fresh, and we clean the coop about once a month.
Welcome to the wonderful world of chickens. I grew up with hens, and recently got back into the fun. Hens don't get "pregnant." They lay eggs. They will lay eggs whether there is a rooster present or not. But when there is a rooster, the eggs may be fertilized and if she is broody and incubates...
We took the advice of others on this site and tried the Sweet PDZ. It is wonderful stuff! We sprinkle it on the coop floor before putting the shavings down, and then periodically sprinkle it on the shavings every so often to keep the smell to a minimum. We also sprinkle a bit under the coop...
I have had chickens since childhood and they love grapes. I do slice them in half, but my father would just toss them in with the rest of the slops. We never lost a chicken to a grape. A fox yes, but not a grape.
No way to stop a crowing rooster. Our 16 week old Dominique started crowing last week and won't shut up. But we have a coop with windows and found that if we covered up the windows with a blanket, he wouldn't start crowing until we let him out at 7 AM. But now I am worrying that the lack of...
Hi everyone,
What a wonderful site this is! My name is Katie and I live in Lakeville, MA. My family had chickens when I was growing up, and I have to say that there are a lot of great new gadgets out there that make raising chickens much easier than I remember! After 30 years, here I am back in...
Thanks so much for this link to the good poo bad poo. My chicks are three weeks old and I am noticing some smelly cecal poop, and was worried that my chicks were getting ill.
