How do I get dark orange egg yolks

I've used paprika with great success.

What feeder design should I use?

I use this type, as well, and we love it. I prefer to have the food hanging. It helps deter rodents. It also prevents the chickens from flinging food around.

    Altering eggs

I experimented between 2 Tbsp to about 1/3 cup between my 4 birds. The yolks became a very dark reddish orange.

    Altering eggs

Adding paprika to the feed will turn the yolks orange. When I experimented with it they were pretty. The eggs tasted the same. I notice that my eggs are more mild tasting than store eggs because they are so fresh. Store eggs are typically more than 60 or even 90 days old. To me they have strong...

    Waterer reccommendations

We are loving this one. It has feet so you can set it down to fill. We also have a one gallon homemade version that has been fine. We needed a bigger one when we doubled our flock recently. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FHUGWK4/?tag=backy-20

How to best give grit to your birds

We use hoppers like this, too, for both grit and oyster shells.

    Obnoxiously loud hen

My chickens are loud, and are just as close to my neighbors as they are to me. Somehow my neighbors can't hear them in their house. No idea how that's possible- I can hear them with all the doors and windows shut. Maybe talk to your neighbor to see if it's even an issue?

    Best locationfor food placement

Our run is covered, and I keep the food and water there. Honestly it's just more convenient for me to maintain near the door of the run than it would be in the coop. Saves space in the henhouse, too.

    Worth the $ Waterer?

We use food grade buckets, but I wonder about the plastic that the nipples are made from....

    Most docile breed

Well, we added a new outdoor roost, a swing, a log with holes drilled to hide treats, and two hanging baskets for plucking veggies from. They were especially keen on the log and the baskets. I've also let them out in the yard for a bit yesterday and today. I need a chicken herding dog, lol... I...

    Most docile breed

We did increase the protein to 19% when this first started.

    Most docile breed

Thanks, all! Very wise advice. We're going to try some no pick solution and more enrichment. The 4 birds have a 7'x8' henhouse and an 8'x10' run. We're also going to see about fencing another area that is grass where they could "free range" for a bit each day while we supervise them. I would...

    Most docile breed

What breeds are you chickens that are most docile with one another? We have an EE and a BCM that are feather plucking my other mellow EE and my mellow PBR. The naughty EE isn't laying eggs at all and the BCM only lays sporadically. They have to go. We're looking for some hopefully mellow birds...
