    Chickens must go...make an offer.

Due to health issues I've decided to let most of my chickens go. I have several breeds and they lay eggs regularly..also some roo's...BO's, Australorps, Wyandottes, etc. as well as silkies, some homemade coops and misc. stuff. Please make an offer if interested Great way to get in the business...

*Are They Too Cold?? Help please!!*

As long as your birds can get out of the wind, have some ventilation but no draft, they are fine. I have Silkies and standards and in 5 plus years have never had one freeze. I've had a couple of roos get frostbite on combs, but that was because they insisted on sleeping in the run. Remember that...

3 yo lab needs 2 B trained - but how?

Yep....she's a Lab! I have a 4 yr. old yellow that I adopted when she was right at 9 months. Never saw such a hyper spaz. She'd go after anything that moved......living or not. Used to chase the chickens until she found out what the wrath of the MOM was. She had one of my girls in her mouth one...

    Free Ranging in Winter

Quote: So do mine.....360 days a year. If it's really windy they go out of the wind, but they would rather be outside whenever possible.

Do I need additional heating sources for coop with 2 chickens

Hi and I've had chickens for several years now and have 78 of them.......26 of those are silkies. The only birds that ever get supplemntal heat are babies (with a gradual reduction as they feather out) or a sick bird (I've only had 2, and they were both shipped birds). I've also had horses for...

    Stupid question about breeding silkies......

Hi, and welcome to BYC......the answer to your question is........it all depends on if your white is a pure white (both parents were white and their parents were white, etc. and the genetics of your red roo as well). There's a long-running discussion on silkie genetics here.....do a search and...

Broody hen, but I don't want chicks. What to do?

I have a 3 yr. old BO that's been broody all summer......and isn't sitting on any eggs! Sometimes they just don't get it. We've moved her, tried a cage, used a wire-bottom one, etc. I've never had a broody this determined......I could give her a fertile egg or two, but I don't need more babies...

    Feeding chickens eggs

I feed my chickens leftover eggs (sometimes there are some LOL) with the shells scrambled in too........good calcium and protein...and even toss in leftovers or yogurt as filler and they've never eaten raw eggs....I've had them for 4 plus years now.

    Water additives to decrease algae?

ACV is Apple Cider Vinegar......you can get it anywhere, but the "best" is organic, which isn't as refined and still has the good stuff in it.....I've used organic and regular and haven't noticed a difference in effectiveness, just price. JMHO, of course....

    OK to use well water?

I've lived in this country home for 14 years and have always used our iron-laden well water for our livestock (horses, chickens. dogs and cats) with no problems at all.....decades ago there wasn't a choice, and you never heard of any problems. Personally, I prefer the taste of well water over...

    Do you eat the eggs?

You bet! My grandkids love the "baby eggs" and always look forward to having them with silver dollar pancakes when they sleep over......I always try to hatch a few new birds every few months to make sure I have pullet eggs for them. You can also market them as junior eggs and they sell really...

Is this BO a roo or hen?

Looks like my pullets.......the legs are pretty dainty for a roo......and I don't see spur buds.

Chicken lawsuit makes the news in FL

Is this guy a new neighbor? If there have been chickens on this property for "a couple of years" you'd think he would've heard them before now. I have almost 100 chickens (roosters, hens, pullets and chicks) and don't hear them with my windows closed and the air on. I used to live in Ft...

How can you tell a silkies gender at 1 month or less?

I've been raising silkies for 4 years now and I don't even attempt to sex them for 90 days. Even then I can get it wrong...they're odd little things (but I love them anyway!) Even my standard breeds I let mature about the same amount of time, I'd rather be 99% certain that I'm selling a pullet...

Having eggs shipped for the 1st time - Advice?

Hi....YES and YES are the answers to your questions. The shipper should label the box on all sides "live embryos" or "fragile hatching eggs", "please call XXX-XXXX immediately", and you should give your PO a heads up as well. Here, my PO always calls my cell as soon as the truck arrives (usually...
