I have about 7 quail balding in the same spot. I picked up the wrong feed which is lower in protein than what they usually eat. The skin isn’t irritated. They’re in a 8’x10’ ground pen.
I did a lot of research before incubating and read that the float test was easier with quail. I tried candling but found it hard to tell. When I placed them into the water 3 sank, 2 flipped upside down and the rest I could see move around in the water (so cool).
I started with 40 and when I did the float test, only 5 didn’t develop. Today is day 17 and so far 1 has hatched. Such an exciting experience for the whole family :celebrate

Good to know. 2 months old. I just got them under more light so no eggs yet. I just discovered another male out of the 5...so 3 out of 5 are Roos.
Now I have to decide who says and who goes. Started with 4: 9 and now 6: 11.

I’ll just watch him/her and see if any crowing happens. I didn’t see any foam but I don’t think I’ve mastered vent sexing yet.
