    Broody accepted chicks, now what?

Looks like I don't have to worry! She got them walking around and through a hawk attack!

    Broody accepted chicks, now what?

I'll have to wait for pictures, she's still suuuuper upset at me for the week I spent trying to break her of being broody - she orbs up when I approach and makes warning noises 🤣 One day this past week when I tried to do it I sat down in an outside chair and she hopped up and tried to peck my...

    Broody accepted chicks, now what?

Yesterday I put some day old chicks under my Buff Orpington who has been aggressively broody, and I believe she's accepted them. However, it's her first time getting any chicks, what milestones should I be looking for? At what point should she be leaving the nest with them to walk around or show...

Celebrating a win - regular customer!

You're right - I may be the one handing them out and taking the money (to buy the sunflower seeds they snack on 🤣 ) but if they don't lay, I can't control that. Although I will have to search better the times they decide to start laying in my yard - can't let it get up to 20+ eggs when I've got...

Celebrating a win - regular customer!

I just feel like "omg, now I HAVE to have eggs for this person!!" which, I have more than enough but it just feels so much more present now! Also, I'll have to let her know come winter that there won't be as many. Having a standing order makes the whole thing more real than "oh I have some...

Celebrating a win - regular customer!

I just want to celebrate a win with people who will also understand - I've sold some eggs this week and just had someone ask that I reserve 2 dozen a week for her!! Technically she wants 3 dozen but I told her that won't be possible until my chicks are grown. How do y'all handle the pressure...

First time outdoor brooder... am I forgetting anything ?

I have almost the exact setup - I don't have a cover on my brooder, but I have shoved a branch across the crate so my chicks like to perch there and haven't gotten on the brooder at all. It also helps that I currently leave the crate door open during the day so they wander around my coop - way...

I've got 6 other hens, so a total of 7 with my silkie. 11 if you count my chicks!

Silkie sisters died - need advice for last one

I started out with 3 buff silkies within my flock, and two have died recently, leaving one. They were the bottom of the pecking order and all the silkies flocked together within the larger group. I'm trying to figure out how to give my remaining hen companionship again or if she even needs it...

ISO silkie hens/pullets, preferably buff // central TX

Hey y'all! I recently lost 2/3 of my buff Silkies to an owl and cold. I have one left and I am seeking 1-2 adult-ish silkies to buy so that she's not alone in the flock. Preferably buff colored, since she is too and I'm hoping that will mesh them better. I am in central Texas, North Austin area!

    Pallet coop question

Finally got it done! Obviously need to clean up my tools and everything. The ladies don't know quite what the roosting bars are for - they spent last night huddled on the ground behind the water dispenser!

    Pallet coop question

I'll have to check out the star/square screws, I just got normal Phillips head deck screws, and I definitely stripped one or two. Some of the wood was also nearly impossible to pre-drill through, I've never had that problem before! Fresh battery in the drill and everything, but we powered...

    Pallet coop question

Thank y'all for the advice and help! I started building out of pallets this weekend, I'll need to post pics - I completely forgot to take any at all 🤣 Too busy trying to get screws through pallet wood!

    Pallet coop question

Hey y'all! I got a bunch of pallets to use the wood to build my coop (lumber prices are way too crazy right now!), and all the pallet coops I see just use the lumber itself. I'm curious if there are any downsides I'm missing to using the whole pallet as-is? It seems like an easy way to build the...

    Getting chicks used to handling

Hey y'all! I just got my first chicks, and I'm wondering what tips/tricks y'all have for getting them used to me? I've been sticking my hand in their brooder and leaving it there, sometimes with feed and sometimes not, but I'd love some advice!
