Hello everyone,
Today I noticed that my hen pooped herself really bad so I took her inside to give her a bath. It was all hard and gross so I cut a part of her vent feathers to clean it up.
When I cleaned the area, I noticed that her vent was red and inflamed, almost like she has hemorrhoids...
I see. When I put Maru (the victim) and her sister together at least Maru would fight back instead of being scared, so I think I might try that. The "panic room" in the run is about 2'x5'. Is this enough for the 2 hens to get away from one another?
Also, what do you mean by "you can try pin...
Thank you for your reply. I turned off the heat lamp. What would be considered "cold" for chickens?
Yeah, I can see how the video makes it look tight in there. When we had the heat lamp on, all the chickens roosted right next to the lamp. Our coop is the Wichita cabin coop, the total size is...
Hello folks,
I posted about my Olive egger Maru a little over a month ago here. She survived and now has all her tail feathers again and is fully recovered. Today, I decided to re-introduce them again, but this time with a barrier between her and the other chickens. I am just a little concerned...
She is doing A LOT better. Her tail feathers are already regrowing, but I still don't know if her oil gland is okay.
This weekend I tried bringing her outside so she could hang out with her sister, her sister (a buff Orpington) was really aggressive towards her. Her sister would literally chase...
Hello! Thank you for asking. She is doing really well and is a lot more active in the last 3 days. I've been making sure that her wound is always covered with neosporin and vitamin b3 (to help the healing process). I've attached a picture from this morning, there is still some flesh exposed, but...
I noticed she has been pecking at herself (video: https://giphy.com/gifs/6CUCshsRJ5E5uf9DVt). Does this look okay? I'm not sure if I should let her do it 😔
Thank you so much for the throughout explanation.
So as per your suggestion I cleaned the wound this morning with a saline solution and then added a good layer of neosporin (no pain killer) to the wound.
I took more pictures as well. I checked her vent and it wasn't damaged, however, I think...
Thank you. I will try checking if the oil gland is still good.
I read the article plus the comments. I think what I was missing is a place for the hens to escape to if things got bad. Do I need to do an
This is in the butt (where tail feathers were). The vent is okay, she pooped a couple times...
Thank you all. I bought some bluekote and some neosporin today. I am thinking of spraying bluekote and then adding neosporin to the wound once it dries up. Does that sound good?
Also, is there anything I can do to help her with the pain? Seeing her suffering breaks my heart.
Hello everyone,
I have a couple hens about 9 weeks old, and for the last month I put them with the older chickens but separated by a hardware cloth. Sometimes I would let them roam together under supervision but the older hens would always peck at the younger ones. I've read guides that said...
