Here's a few of my birds. I can't remember what the yellow variety are called exactly, but 3 of them are extremely social with me and just smile at me all day
Hi everyone! I'm Wes, aka Kaya1, and I live in Placer county just outside Sacramento.
I currently have 22 female Coturnix of all different colors and sizes. I don't want to deal with males, so I don't breed or hatch. They're all my spoiled little daughters in their 8/12' aviary.
Everything I...
Occasionally they get mud balls on their feet, but this girl got stuck in between some sticks and the chicken wire, and hasn't walked right since. I removed all of the sticks. She likely poked her belly, and it got infected.
They're in an aviary on mostly clay dirt and sand. This one has a limp though, and kinda drags her stomach on the ground a bit. My girls are also kinda fat, so that may contribute to it. For how wounded she is she still hobbles along happily, and no other birds bother her.
I need help identifying a growth on my hen. It looks like it could be a cyst from an infected wound. If anyone has had a similar situation I'd appreciate advice on how to treat it.
Yes, she's been sitting on a pile of eggs for almost a week now. I've just left her alone. I have 21 other females and no males in the aviary and she's my only A&M, so it's probably just her breed.
I'm in Sacramento area and I had my birds in cages on my apartment patio for over a year. I couldn't find any laws against it, and no neighbors ever complained about the roo, even though I could hear him from across the complex.
I went from small cages to a big aviary, and my cots only flew when stressed. They do, however, run and pounce when they're excited or happy, sometimes getting a little air. I'd say that flying is a stress response, so I doubt they "miss" it.
I started with a metal shelf with 1"/ 1/2" wire around it, linked with zip ties and small Rubbermaids for sand. It ran me around $150, but like you said, they get bored, and they were less happy. Now I have 14'/10' chain link fence with chicken wire on dirt.
