Only 8 weeks. Their tail feathers started getting nice and big maybe 3 weeks ago give or take. Since then I’ve noticed random feathers all tail area throughout their favorite hang out spots since then. I’ve heard it’s rare but possible the other chicks found her too weak/sick and chose to act...
The reason I suspect the others or one of the others is because I’ve seen tail feathers from the dead chick all over the yard. Only recently did I notice it was bad, then she died. I doubt hawks/foxes as both would have cause more damage. As for dogs/cats, I doubt cats though a dog is possible...
Last night I went out to do a head count on my 8wk old sex links. I was missing one so I went searching. There is one spot they always go to right after being let out for the day. I went there first and immediately saw my missing chick. Her neck had been snapped and almost all her tail feathers...
That is exactly why I would prefer adopting one from someone who can speak on personality before i choose a roo. I’ve heard many issues can arise with a new rooster vs an older one. Would that be a reasonable choice or would you personally stay firm I wait? If I do choose to wait, how old should...
You all have been very helpful! I would be collecting eggs daily so now I know fertilized eggs will be safe to eat/give away. Only reason I was concerned over mating was because I’d hate to crack an egg and plop a baby bird on my pan. Guess that doesn’t happen as much as it does in my head haha...
I have 6 7-wk old red sex link pullets. I have a fenced in acre of land and have been allowing them to free range by day and lock them up only at night. They have been growing beautifully and are so smart. They have been a pleasure to raise so far.
Yesterday, as I passed my window I noticed...
Guess who decided the large backyard wasn’t good enough... I walk out front and my dog keeps looking over the porch so I look... and all 6 of my pullets are roaming around eating buggies. The slipped out through parts of my lattice work I didn’t even think they would have been able to fit...
over the past week or so ive noticed ant hills (small to big in size) popping up all over my yard. What are some ways you take care of the ants? My chicks free range during the day so the more natural the better.
Everyone around here calls them sugar ants. They are all black and very small.
Im not sure how much hunting is done in WV but tracking down a place that does game processing might be able to help. Im in Louisiana and there are several local restaurants and even a few small grocery stores will do it as well. When in doubt google game processing in your area.
