    Pale comb, lethargic barred Rock

Ah I wish I had come back to this sooner. We opened her up and found rotten egg yolks and some broken shell so I’m assuming some kind of internal laying issue? Everyone else seems healthy (though one gal did lay a fairy egg today and we’re on edge after losing our first chicken).

    Pale comb, lethargic barred Rock

She’s eating and drinking. She’s looking worse again this afternoon. I forgot to mention we did do a dewormer after this intial post because we didn’t know what else to do.

Right now we have her in the garage in quarantine with electrolytes and probiotics going. Her color is better but she still seems lethargic? Her poop has gone more bright green but she IS pooping more which seems like a good thing to me? I’m not sure. I sure hope it’s not reproductive

    Pale comb, lethargic barred Rock

None of the local vets take chickens, a few places have said they’d call us back about testing a fecal sample but they haven’t gotten back to us yet. all our birds are on a basic layer feed, Purina I think, and they get corn and kitchen scraps as treats a few times a week. Occasionally bread.

    Pale comb, lethargic barred Rock

Our 7 month old barred rock is having a rough week. She stopped laying a week ago which initially didn’t worry me because the weather has gotten much cooler and shorter days. But in the last two days her comb has gotten much paler (in these photos it actually looks redder than it has...

One chicken laying early, when to switch to laying food?

Sweet! Easy peasy. I love it when stuff can be reused and works out like this.

One chicken laying early, when to switch to laying food?

It doesn’t matter if they’re wild harvested oysters right? We collect them routinely around here for dinner so we always have oyster shells hanging out.

Oh we have tons of oyster shells! I’ll throw them in today!

One chicken laying early, when to switch to laying food?

Also related and while I’m here, we hadn’t put the nesting boxes in yet but we’re throwing them in today. Is there anything special we need to do to ensure they lay there (to the best of our ability) and make sure the not layers aren’t just hanging in the nesting boxes? I know this part isn’t...

One chicken laying early, when to switch to laying food?

I have a question about switching to laying food. My chickens are just under 16 weeks old and today we found an egg! Pretty sure it’s our leghorn since her comb is all fat and red now, but who knows. The other chickens don’t look ready to lay yet or even like it’ll be soon, so should I switch...

    Barred Rock 15 weeks

And funny note she was supposed to be an austrolop buuuuut mistakes were made at TSC. This mistake I’m not too mad about, but has definitely made me eyeball Kylo more than usual.

Thank you! She’s our favorite. Such a sweetie pie too. She likes to curl up in the kids laps.
