YES I realize roosters crow and the coop is covered at night so its not the light. They are just very opinionated. I did, by the way, come up with a way to reduce the sound. We doubled the wood and put a roofing liner in between. Thank you to those who offered up HELPFUL suggestions. The...
Hetachick - thanks for the info. That was what I was asking - basically can I try and help it along and at what point? I don't want to kill the chick but I also don't want to wait too long and it already be dead.
I have a couple eggs under my silkie 1 for sure was developing during candling. I know they sometimes can hatch at day 23, but does anyone know a way (via candling??) to check to see if the chick is alive before I dispose of it tomorrow? I know that it probably wont be a strong or healthy...
I had 3 babies hatch this year, 2 are boys. THey some times will play fight (I call it chicken sumo- wrestling) where they do the stare down at one another and then pounce but thats the end of it. Most of the time they are attached at the hip (wing) getting into as much trouble together as...
yes, Im being sarcastic - no one has threatened my roosters. I live in so california so insulation is not necessary for the coop. They are silkies so they have fur coats anyway:)
Has anyone tried using some kind of soundproofing/acoustical material on their coop to keep the neighbors from killing your chickens?? I have 3 very LOUD boys that love to talk around 4-7 am. Any ideas short of chicken stew, re-homing would be welcome:) They are my babies so I WILL come up...

I have one silkie rooster that is the loudest male on the planet!! It's a good thing he is a very special boy because that voice is not charming at 4 AM! He didn't start crowing until he was about 9 months. I have 2 babies, now 4 months, who just sarted crowing a couple weeks ago...
I had 2 boys and one girl hatch this summer and I plan on keeping all of them. (all silkies) So far, everyone gets along and is happy. I couldn't get rid of the boys! If worst comes to worst, I'll build another coop. I couldn't possibly separate the family!!
I can't imagine my life with out my silkies! I let one of my girls hatch her eggs this summer and ended up with 2 roosters and a hen. So far they are all getting along fine and dad is looking after everyone. YOU WILL NOT REGET HAVING THEM IN YOUR LIFE!! They are amazing!!
