we are ready to put the 4week old chicks into the chicken yard in a "tractor" type pen until full sized and can be integrated with the older hens. we plan to use the tractor for game hens after. how much space do they need if they are not going to be in there permanently? we want it to be...
good idea......thanks! no treats( ok, just a handful for 19 hens) and only fresh veggies.no bread, scratch, barley, etc. until they are back on schedule......19 hens-3 eggs.....i don't think so.........
boy, is this a sore subject! i just did the calculations to compare with last year, which was the first season of production for these hens and for april thru june so far, production is down 25-35% over last year! we've looked everywhere for eggs, gathered throughout the day to eliminate...
me too! about three weeks ago i found a (very) small egg and then another a week later and then two, one brown like the others, and one green in the same day! my hens are 18 month's old and have been laying fine, but production is down since winter, and these little eggs are curious.........
we used super glue on hens attacked by dogs and it worked very well..we also coated the wounds with no-peck to keep the other hens from pecking at the wounds...saved three hens this way.....
my chickens love lettuce, milk, cooked rice and pasta, anything they can tear apart... tomatoes, chard, melons...they get whatever plant based scraps i can find or get donated. any hard foods like carrots, celery, green beans, i run through the food processor first to make it more edible...
i find dirty eggs directly correspond to mud in the pen...go figure! i keep the dirty ones, and if they are especially bad, i wash in cold water with veggie wash and refrigerate right away.
same thing here1 i was getting 18-20 eggs daily until a mass of thunderstorms and rain came through last month and then again this past weekend.......production dropped by 50% overnight! slowly came back up on good, bright days but down again as soon as the storms hit.
i am harvesting potatoes and would like to feed the greens to the hens, they have eaten some to this point, but i wonder if they are poisonous to chickens like they are to humans.
