For sustenance and production:
My first choice for all around industrious breed is the Plymouth Barred Rock, provided one has the room, as they’re large meaty birds. I’ll take the Pearl Star and Brown Leghorn for eggs on range. (Rock meat is the best I’ve ever had, for flavor and texture).
Now, I also do love the gentle nature and beauty of the Welsumer and Sussex, for dual purpose in semi confinement, as these tend to seek out wild nests, and they’re not as high of producers as others. (Sussex meat is fine grained and very rich in fat for broth).
For smaller spaces, I like high production egg layers that tolerate confinement. I like White Leghorns (Browns don’t confine well, although I like them for eggs on range) and the Pearl Stars.
For a hybrid, I go for smaller weight of bird, my pick being the ISA Brown. (White Leghorn Cock over Rhode Island Red hen). I’ve gotten away from heavier breeds for small spaces because of consumption primarily.
Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalms 139:23-24
