I would keep your chickens in a covered run, enclosed so no wild birds can enter (covered on top so wild birds' poop can't land in there). Free roaming your chickens really ups their chances of getting sick right now. DEFINITELY don't wear your feed store shoes anywhere NEAR where the chickens...

Thanks you so much for mentioning it but I am realizing this is turning out to be more complicated than I hoped. I think I will keep a close eye on Cordelia and if she seems to be suffering move her inside the house again this winter, and get a couple of chicks for her this spring. Good luck...

Hinotari, do you would think a couple of your hens would make friends with a larger bird? I have a mobility-challenged black copper maran who needs some friends, but just read that silkies stick to themselves, what do you think? I'm looking specifically for friends for her.

Hi! Thanks for your reply, sounds like you have a great set up. We have kind of done the same thing. Our hen house is pretty big so we cordoned off almost half with wire mesh. When the chickens are inside she can see and hear them, but not really interact, you know? I set up her own run, also...
