Thanks for your reply! I didn’t realize that they don’t need food/water for three days! You would recommend at least a smaller waterer for the chicks near the hens typical waterer, right?
Hi! I recently received 6 fertilized eggs for my broody buff Orpington. I have never hatched before, but this girl is determined! I’m planning to let her hatch in a nesting box, which is maybe an inch or two higher than the coop floor. The coop itself is a few feet off the ground and the hens...
Hi and thanks for your response! I have not had coccidiosis confirmed via fecal float, but after three days of treatment, the one that's been exhibiting symptoms is showing signs of improvement. Symptoms I've seen from this hen include - pale comb (when everyone else's was bright red)...
Hi everyone!
It's been awhile since something has gone awry in my coop. In fact, I recently celebrated my chickens third birthday. It was a point of pride that my original six were all still with me and healthy.
Fast forward a month and we have coccidiosis in the flock. I'm crushed. Only one...
Thank you! I actually worked them a month ago, knowing we would be gone for a couple weeks and not needing the eggs. Just made an appointment at our vet - earliest they could get me in is Thursday. I’ll keep you posted.
Again - thanks so much!! Helps to not feel so alone in this.
Thanks again everyone!
I’m picking up NutriDrench this afternoon, but do currently have save a chick probiotics in her water. Around an hour ago, her crop felt almost flat - not completely empty, but just as if some grit was in there. I also noticed it was far more right than centered, but...
Hi all,
I’ve been away traveling for two weeks and my chickens were being taken care of by a neighbor. While I was gone, it was very hot and muggy in NY.
Anyways - last night when I arrived home (11pm), I popped my head in the coop to see everyone. My friendliest girl, 2 year old buff...
Something else I noticed after comparing to my other SLW - below her chest is a long blue line that goes to her vent. The others just have regular flesh coloring in that area. Any ideas? My initial thoughts are bruising. Pictures attached.
Hi everyone! Two days ago one of my silver laced wynadottes was attacked by a hawk. Luckily, my husband heard them making noise and scared the hawk off. My girl, who is over a year old, was in shock for most of the night. We are currently keeping her in a large dog crate until her wounds heal...
I'm sorry to hear that Longfellow - I'm not sure what could be causing that. Could you provide any more information?
Wyorp Rock - my feed place didn't have any feather fixer, but they did have a multi flock starter at 22%. Think I could go ahead and feed that for a little while? It's a non...
Oh - stripped - gotcha! So the fluff by the base is probably the natural down? And the usual feathers that cover all of that are missing. I was concerned the feathers were changing.
For extra protein, I've been giving scrambled eggs and meal worms. I've been sprouting barley seeds to keep them...
Thank you! The picking has been a pretty easy issue to fight, but I cannot figure out why all of the SLW are getting these fluffy feathers by the base of their tails. I looked at pictures from earlier in the winter and there is nothing like it. Has anyone observed this? Picture three shows the...
Hi! Thanks for responding. I have been able to watch at night and I definitely see pecking, but it's directed toward just one girl. The first one I applied blu-kote and the apron - feathers coming back in but still has that odd look to it. Now it's the one in the second picture.
Oil glands...
