UPDATE: Week Two: The flock is making great progress - I can clearly see patches where grass is all but gone. They are going to be so bummed when they learn that after this demo work - no more backyard trips. :) But I may be done with the Mulching Bin project - which I expect their help with...
Last Summer I decided that I don't really need or want a grass lawn in my backyard; but, the idea of removing everything so I can replant and redesign just tires me out. Hey now, my small flock sure made a blank landscape of their Chicken Run & Yard and it's been bare dirt since 2016... hmmmm...
Well, I've had some difficulties with my inherited Australorp - but perhaps because I didn't raise her from chick - or that she's my only in the flock? She is aloof and regal. I call her Regina (or Maleficent). She is a bully and has spent some time in chicken jail; but since others have had...
This thread has been very interesting. My Brown Leghorns have um,.. yes, very different personalities! Not flighty, not quite bullies, but aggressive and very food oriented. I generally only name the hens with the biggest personalities and they do qualify. One of them (Poppi) is the ultimate...
Observed my spring pullets yesterday: a couple were charging each other like bulls... head down and running right at the other (playing chicken, lol). It was a bit aggressive but seemed more like testing or play as there wasn't much follow through...
I'm just guessing the young ones are...
I added (3) Plymouth (barred) rocks in 2014. They have been my friendliest hens so far. They integrated easily, get along well with others, always look fluffy and lovely. Oh, and yes, I think they may be the most chatty of the flock, lol. Very pleased with this breed.
So far so good - I think. I have a Brown Leghorn (Popi) that looks like crap - and I am hoping it's a big ugly molt... (time would be about right). But it also could be Popi is the lowest in the pecking order and is getting demolished... sigh. I have been watching the flock as much as I can -...
I did the isolate the bully method last year - it actually worked! She went into a molt and when she was returned, the next generation had matured enough to keep her on the lower rungs. However.... it's spring and I'm starting to see increased feather picking again.... sigh... not sure who is...
Thank you for the tip! I did the "cage in the coop-live side by side" method to introduce the next gen to the first gen, but was adding a group of 5.. just a single hen - I'm worried about her already, lol.
Just last month or so the Gig Harbor Wilco had many hatchlings - Wynadotte's - I believe Silver Laced. Sorry this doesn't help you now, but is a place to consider in the Spring.
If I thought I could ease your hen in - I would love some blue eggs, but my flock is just settling into a new...
What is interesting is that I was checking on her this morning before work and found her out of the cage? Prison Break! Was it chicken magic? Lol.
Didn't have time to investigate ... DH was the one that chased her down and put her in... somehow I don't think he'll do that again for me.. darn...
Thank you! Maleficent is certainly not liking her chicken jail, but I hope she can become a reformed and better leader. I don't have many good options that I know of after this... rehome or stew... just a shame as she is a good layer and a gorgeous bird.
Does the bully need to be kept in complete isolation- not to be seen or heard?
Regina (aka Maleficent) is a big beautiful black Australorp with shiny black eyes and an evil streak a mile wide. It's obvious she is queen of the roost, her feathers glow while all her 4 peers have wounds and...
Update:
Bluekote'd all plucked-red patches on entire flock
replaced highest roost perch with much longer version
added toys, daily scratch, large tree limbs to run to keep them busier
added a raised veggie garden (covered with mesh)
September:
feathers aren't really grown back - so is...
