I was referring to a situation that would cause or require an amputated leg (whether surgical or auto-amputation from necrosis) due to a leg band, like ischemic injury to the distal leg and foot which would cause necrosis and gangrene. In a situation like that, I would cull a chick for sure...
I have chickens with blue, some with green, some red. My most current boxes are pale pink and those are pretty. But the wing band will be concealed by feathers once the birds matures and you won't even see it on the bird except for maybe the tip on tighter feathered breeds like Leghorns or...
Yes I like the Zip wing bands. I buy them on Amazon now, but you can also find them on Ebay and other online stores.
Here is a link to the bands.
And here is a link to the Zip pliers you clamp the bands with to secure them in place.
@Kung_pao your Divinity looks amazing btw! I have had the hardest time avoiding sweets during the holidays, but I haven't indulged too much. 😇 I love sweets so much though! We are having family pictures taken soon so trying to be good. Also going to have some Cap and Gown pics done since I...
It is a very real concern. I have never had one injured to the point of being culled or anything like that from a leg band, thank God. We would most certainly humanely cull a chick before we would keep one that is one-legged though. Chickens literally spend nearly their entire lives on their...
Yes I have wing banded chickens from day-old to full grown. You can try to push the wing band through on 8 week olds, but if the band bends and won't penetrate the wing web you will have to use a knife tip to make the hole. It sounds worse than what it really is. you make one small puncture...
I will share another strong reason I prefer wing bands to leg bands in chicks. When you brood the volume of chicks we go through, it can be easy to miss up-sizing a leg band. When we first started using the zip ties, I hadn't wing banded young chicks before, so I would keep upgrading their leg...
I actually don’t mind that because we catch up potential breeders to check them out anyway. It isn’t too much bother to catch them or go into a pen to get them to check their wing band. It is far better than having a bird lose their leg band and having no clue which bird is what because it is...
As far as chicks pecking at them. If the fresh band holes bleed (which is rare), they may pick at the blood. So if any blood is seen when you band, spray with blue kote and they wont bother them.
From experience, birds are more likely to lose a leg band than lose a wing band. And in order to keep chicks leg banded, you have to keep upsizing leg bands as the birds grow and that is way too much of a chore. They can be leg banded temporarily with zip ties out of the incubator then wing...
