Thank you for the prompt reply! Looks exactly like wing lice from the other post. Thanks again.

    Help. Sick duck

One of my calls was acting sick. Thought it was bumble foot, but now see she has a lot of these long tiny bugs on her. What are they? FYI We are in Michigan and it is around 25 degrees out.

    The Duck Thread

Depends on your definition of "fly". Some can get a couple feet off the ground and go 50 feet or so but they can't fly away like a wild or call duck can. If I remember right they are mild tempered and lay a lot of eggs.

    My new duck house

Since you refused to answer my logical question I'll answer it for you. 19 call ducks and 1 blue Swedish with a leg defect. It is super cool seeing the calls flying by the windows as they fly around the house in the summer.

    My new duck house

We have to herd them in at the end of the day, but since they are fed in their pen they aren't "too" resistant. The bigger issue we have is they refuse to go in our large pond, so we have to provide water.. Ever since one of them was taken down by a snapper (that has since been caught) they...

Mandarin Duck thread ( for posting pictures and discussing)

That makes sense. I put the trap out the next day but haven't had any luck. I saw what looked like cat tracks a couple days later, but nothing attacked the remaining ducks. After a few days I was able to get chicken wire over the bottom couple feet (in addition to the welded wire). Since then...

Mandarin Duck thread ( for posting pictures and discussing)

Quote: Whatever it was made it inside the pen, and I wouldn't think a large coon could get through the 2x4" welded wire fence. I can see blood on 2 of the fence wires where the predator squeezed through, which makes me think it must have been something smaller. I have also seen a skunk around...

Mandarin Duck thread ( for posting pictures and discussing)

Something ate the head off my female mandarin. My guess is a skunk. I've taken steps to further secure the pen, and am wondering if anyone in Michigan has a female they would be willing to sell. Someone earlier asked about lining their pen with stones. My pen is lined with river rock and the...

Mandarin Duck thread ( for posting pictures and discussing)

Thanks a ton for your answers. It is nice to know that before long I can stop showing people pictures of my drake and following it with "... but this is what he WILL look like" and showing them a picture from online. Good idea on taking the nest box out, although with ours under our deck it...

Mandarin Duck thread ( for posting pictures and discussing)

I've been searching online for when the male mandarin gets his mating plumage without any luck. My male has started getting more "colorful" and I'm wondering if this is typical. Also, the white female I have has not shown any interest in the nesting box. Is that typical for this time of the...

    Breeding Mandarin Ducks

Quote: According to this chart posted by KansasKid several years ago, all my babies will be normal colored. Oh wait, I don't know how to add a picture so instead I'll post the link to the post: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/561538/normal-mandarin-and-white-mandarin-boys-need-help Also I...

    Breeding Mandarin Ducks

Good questions in this thread that I want to know as well, so perhaps bumping it will cause someone experienced to see it. On a related note, I have a regular male and white female. From the chart I saw can I assume I won't get any white offspring? The genetics chart someone posted on a...

Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Quote: I'm not a vet so take this for what it is worth (not much), but if I were you I'd give them the medicated today, but buy nonmedicated tomorrow and gradually dispense the rest of the medicated over the next several weeks. The issue with the medicated is that the ducks eat so much more...

Adult ducks not interested in pond

I had some pond-hating ducks myself. The would refuse to go in. The problem is, the greatest advantage of the pond is protection from predators and sure enough a neighbor's dog wandered over and killed them all. The next batch I got were afraid of the water as well until one day when a couple...
