That's what I was wondering, if the neck could be floppy regardless of reason for the death. I don't think it was anything that would affect the other birds. If I didn't have so many other things to attend to, I could do a necropsy. But I think curiosity will have to go unfulfilled in this case.
Found one of my EE hens dead in the pen yesterday. One year old. Not a mark on her and I had not noticed any signs of illness. It's been hot here but really not bad at all compared to most summers. I'm wondering if her neck was broken because the body was in rigor but her neck was extremely...
Found that thread. I'll be reading through it. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks I"ll look for it too. I see a lot of threads about deep litter in coops but not for the runs. I'll keep looking though. There's a LOT of info here to dig through. Since the climate here is usually dry, DL should work. The current rain is very much an anomaly.
Which other thread? I'd like to look up what they say about doing DL with sand. I don't see many people who do that and certainly not with big, uncovered runs and open air coops. It may not be possible to truly do DL in the run but perhaps a hybrid version of it that I clean out more often...
This is my question too. Now that I have sand in part of the pen, do I continue with DL method on top of the sand? The sand improved the mud problem immediately. I need more but what I was able to put in between rain storms helped a lot. The type of sand I got is basically DG that is further...
Flocking-crazy I really like this idea a lot for the top portion of my pen where the coop section is. I have clay soil so it does hang onto water once it gets soggy like this. We rarely get this much rain in a short period though. I'll be doing some temporary fixes this weekend but will hang...
I went and got some pine shavings last night. That was the only thing I could get my hands on in the evening. That has already made it better in the grow out pen that's in a corner of my run. Will buy some straw bales today. More coverage for the price from those. I do think I need either...
We are having an unusual amount of rain for Austin, Texas which is great, but I'm left with a horrible, mucky mess in the chicken run. I'm doing deep litter in their open air coop (10x10 dog pen with a cover). The rain has invaded that to some degree but it seems salvageable. The problem is...
We are all animal lovers here. We are on this thread to try to solve a problem in the best way we can. Personally I would hesitate to share an opinion on a topic while also confessing I don't actually have any practical experience or knowledge of the topic.
Not a lot of demand for roosters. I did rehome a few last year but only because they were rare breeds. The collars can save their lives if they work. Last one I had the collar didn't work and nobody wanted him.
Perhaps it is the breed. Mine did seem to fight it more than the others I've used a collar on. I tried every configuration I could think of and it barely slowed him down. I even tried using both the sock method and the official collar at the same time. I finally had to give up and send him to...
TalkALittle, that was my concern as well. I did not want to see this company accused of something they didn't do. Honest mistake, but it could cause a lot of trouble if people thought they were promoting cock fighting. Which they most assuredly are not.
I'm not insinuating you are a liar and I'm not saying you didn't see the video. I'm saying you don't understand how the YouTube plugin works. TalkALittle has it right, it's random videos driven by YouTube. So it was NOT a video "on" the website as in put there by nocrowcollars.com.
