It's lockdown day for the 5 mystery eggs, should be hatching on Sunday! Will be fun to see how they turn out, I'm tempted to go any buy some more from there this weekend...
My other light sussex has gone broody again, I'm not sure what to do with her. Last time she crushed the eggs while they...
On a more cheerful note, I candled the runner duck eggs yesterday and 2 were clear, 5 were good and 1 I wasn't sure about, so we should have some ducklings in a few weeks!
I set another 9 eggs in the incubator and have 5 set to hatch on Sunday, looking forward to seeing how these turn out as...
Sorry to hear the 5th chick didn't hatch :(
Sadly the little chick had to be euthanised, part of it's intestines were on the outside and it was getting weaker so I think it was the kindest thing to do.
It was the first chick we've had to cull and I found it more upsetting than when we've had...
Yes, I think this might be the way to go, I'm not great at stuff like that, I'm always scared I'll do it wrong and cause more pain, but my husband is home soon and will do it for me.
Thank you everyone for your advice, I really appreciate it.
Thank you, I think I'm going to have to euthanase :( it's very small compared to the others and although it was bright initially, it seems weaker now. I feel bad, but I think it's the kindest thing to do.
Thank you, I suspected as much to be honest, it's very small compared to the others that hatched.
I haven't culled a chick before, what is the best way to go about it? I've read about using vinegar and bicarb to create CO2, is that a humane way to do it?
Thank you for your reply, it doesn't look great does it :( I've read about people managing to push similar things back in with chicks, with varying levels of sucess, but I'm not sure that's something I could do.
Poor little chick, I wish I could help it, but I don't want it to suffer :(
Thank you both for replying, it's hard to know what to do for the best. It seems amazingly bright and is pottering about cheeping but on the other hand I'm so worried it's suffering :(
I've got a baby fast asleep on me right now so won't be able to do anything for the next hour or so but will...
I had a chick hatch last night with the yolk still attached, it was very wet and had pipped at the wrong end. I tried to get it to sit in a cup, but it kept escaping so I just put clean paper towels down and left it overnight.
It's about 15 hours since it hatch and the yolk looks like it has...
I had a 5 week old chick with very similar injuries, really nasty head wound inflicted by another, bigger chick.
I was really worried it wouldn't make it, but I gave it a wash with hibiscrub and used silver spray and it healed wonderfully, no infections or anything. I personally wouldn't want...
