I built my own incubator to hatch my first chickens.

It has been a busy day! I made a brooder out of pallets, added a webcam to the incubator, and I added a tin roof to my run. Tomorrow is hatching day for the Australorps! Three eggs peeped today! I hope all goes well. Below are some pics of what I have worked on today.

I candled the eggs tonight. It looks like I have 11 fertile Black Australorp eggs out of 12. 11 fertile out of 15 on the Exchequer Leghorns!!! not bad since the Exchequer Leghorns were free.

I built my own incubator to hatch my first chickens.

I do have them marked with X and O. Today is the 5th day if incubation and I have turned them by hand until today. When I first turned on the motor all eggs were at O. I checked them an hour ago and they were all on X. The only way that they couldn't turn is if the wooden rods were too close...

The software for the temp/humidity sensor is called Audrino. It's a open source coding software for programming hardware. The hardware that I programed with the Audrino software is call RFduino but that's just because a friend let me borrow his. Audrino has there own hardware too. The...

My uncle gave me 15 Exchequer Leghorn eggs. I set them today! Last night I added an RFduino that uses Arduino software to talke to a temperature/humidity sensor. It gives me temperature and humidity settings ever 2 seconds. I have it on a spare laptop that I can remote into from work (at lunch...

I built my own incubator to hatch my first chickens.

My wife and I wanted to get some chickens for our 2 boys even though neither one of us knows anything about chickens. I love making things so I decided to make my own incubator. I did a lot of research online. I just set the eggs today (2/16/2015). I bought a dozen Black Australorp eggs from a...
