    11 weeks- What gender?

I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised that I caught the SLW mounting one of my year old hens today! I haven't had roosters before but I didn't expect a cockerel to be so young when he was ready to breed!

Hen's Foot Infected. Think It's Bumblefoot!!!

I haven't ever used chicken booties but my hen did peck at her wrapping all the time. I was lucky if they lasted a day or two. I got better at wrapping it after a few tries but it still was tricky to keep her foot clean.

    Ameracauna Question

I completely agree. :) Luckily I wasn't looking specifically for Ameraucanas, I just wanted to hatch out some eggs under my broody. But I do think that when someone tells me they are selling Ameraucanas (advertised as such) I should be able to trust that, even if I was less informed that I...

    Ameracauna Question

The more I learn, the more I can see that the guy I bought eggs from was either uninformed or being dishonest. :( This is a picture of the light chick immediately after hatching. It's feet are still this color (which is clearly not slate blue).

Hen's Foot Infected. Think It's Bumblefoot!!!

It looks like the beginnings of bumblefoot to me. I would clean the foot with iodine and wrap it (to keep it clean) for a few days. Maybe it will clear up on its own. If you see that it is getting worse you may have to do "surgery." I had to do this for one of my hens last summer and although...
