New to BYC! and ready to start talking chickens!

You can put a light in there coop on a timer, so there is a consistent number of daylight hours. Also, if the are molting, that would explain the drop in production.

    Silkies

I use wood shavings in my two coops, I'm not sure if hay would be as absorbent, even though it would be warmer... I think they should be fine with shavings with the heat lamp, and they huddle together for warmth. Katherine

    Chicken without many feathers

Wow! Thank you! I will let you know how it goes!

Are the houses they would be in insulated, or not? What temp is it in your garage? If your chicks are fully feathered, they probably would be fine, as long as there was a heating lamp at first, to allow them to transition.

    Chicken without many feathers

We don't have a rooster, and there are only the three chickens in that coop. Harriet is a Barred rock, Petite( who also has some feathers missing, but usually is the bully) is RIR, and Greta is a red star(she has all her feathers). These 3 tend to not pick on each other though... I will keep an...

    Chicken without many feathers

When I saw one of our chickens, Harriet, yesterday, she had pretty much all her normal feathers. This afternoon, though, about half of her feathers were totally gone, leaving her back and under wings just skin. Is this molting? None of our chickens have ever looked that bad. At first, I thought...

Introducing a "friend" to a chicken

So... I ordered two chicks. They both were supposed to come today, but there was a mix-up with the order so only 1 came. Is it fine to keep that one by itself while waiting for the other one?

They have been good layers. They did start late(November even though they were born in early April), and there was a period of several months that none of our chickens were laying, but now Ruthie is going strong again, and even more reliable than our RIR and red sex lik(who are even younger than...

    Phoenix care

Do the hens require as many things as roosters do for their tails? The hens tails aren't too long, right? I live in Maine, would Phoenixes be fine in the winter? We do keep the coops at around 40 or higher in the winter with heat lamps. I would love to have one!!! Thanks!

Introducing a "friend" to a chicken

One more question- We are planning on ordering two chicks- one buff orpington and another different breed. Does anyone have a breed to recommend that is not a bully, but very pretty and docile? (I might like to show it in 4-h) Thanks!

Buff orpingtons are the sweetest! Ruthie loves to be carried around the yard, ride the bike, and go sledding! She follows me around like a puppy! The only downside is that she gets picked on by the others, though our other buff was at the top of the pecking order (and the 2 of them were best...
