A lot will depend on the ages of your children. If they are old enough not to try and ingest droppings and they know to wash their hands after playing with the chickens you should be fine. If not I would make a special chicken area and then there is nothing to worry about.

I am so sorry to hear that. Ive had a couple moments where I sat there and said I just killed her. It will get easier with time. The best thing Ive found to do is just try and learn from my oops.
