    Chicken on my head!

Every time I go into the hen house, one hen keeps flying up and landing on my head. Ouch -those toes! She actually tries settling in. No, I don't have poofy hair and I am not tall. The perches in the hen house are taller than me. It is always this one hen. My daughter thinks its hysterical! I...

    Can a rooster wear socks?

Ok, maybe they can;t wear socks, but I would like to do something to help the hens get their feathers back on their backs! Has anyone trimmed their toenails or painted over the tips or something so they would not be as sharp? I am picturing a rooster with hot pink nails! My 7 year old daughter...

My alpacas keep my chickens warm!

I raise and rescue alpacas so when shearing time comes, all the icky stuff that usually gets used for mulch was used this year for insulation for our hen house! It is amazing how warm the hen house was this winter!

    Rooters singing at all hours

My daughter's 3 roosters will sound off any time of night when they hear something. When my husband gets home at midnight, off they go! If our dogs bark at something, even a fire siren, off they go!

Quote: No need to wait for the future! She is a chicken lover! She just brought 3 of her best behaved hens to school yesterday to give a small demonstration about her "ladies"! They were called her girls before, but since they are now laying eggs, they are her ladies!

    Speckled Egg??

Please bear with me as I am new to this.. The "freckles" on the eggs that can wash off -I was told is dirt and "stuff" from the hen which has to be washed off. Is this true? I love seeing spotted eggs and to wash them off is a pain! I am not sure how much cleaning is needed. thoughts?

Just wanted to introduce myself to the group as I am very egg-cited to learn new things. My daughter, who is 7, has raised the 52 chickens that reside here since they were 1 day old. Each chicken has their own name, are trained to come to her and are the most spoiled chickens I have ever heard...
