Great minds -- I had already started the terracing concept with concrete blocks but I haven't determined the actual back end/starting point of the pile yet. Thanks for some great ideas to help me tweak the process!

1) The house is not on top of the trash pile -- but accessing the trash pile would involve equipment too close to the foundation to be safe.

Definitely NOT a water moccasin - agree with the kitchen drawer that it's a black rat snake. They can get in a 1" hole - they love eggs but will take small chicks. Also, just because your chickens can roost up high doesn't mean a coon can't climb. Sleeping chickens are literally in a stupor...
