I have a hen that is just starting to lay eggs. Only, she doesn’t want to lay in the nesting boxes I have set up. I usually let my hens roam in my backyard but this hen found her way into my front yard despite it being completely fenced in. She found a nice spot out front and now desperately...

Not as much as if I were in the country. We have a walled in backyard and the gate stays shut. They are then fenced in on all sides including the top and the coop is inside the fence. It would be a different story if I didn’t have the wall and layers of neighbors with the same walls.

I think we may have another solution. A friend is giving us a really nice shed that we may be able to use to add on to the coop while taking into consideration all of the details that y’all have shared with me.

That’s probably why the manufacturer put them as low as they did.

My husband is going to move the roosts up and cut vents. The dividers are easy. I can remove them when I go outside. I was thinking that we can also add on to the back of the coop since the back wall comes off. That’ll be a project for this fall. Thank you for all of your help!

I measured my coop. The “living quarters” without the nesting boxes is 39.5”x39.5”. The two nesting boxes are 32.5”x13.5”

I’ll probably do something similar. I’m loving having the chickens and I don’t see giving them up unless I had to. We are learning and will definitely use what we learn in the future.
