I don't know whether she's currently laying, but I guess I'll find out soon. She actually seems pretty normal, walking around, eating, drinking. It doesn't seem to impair her. Again, with 16 chickens and a shared laying area, you never know whose eggs are whose. Plus the coop fairly far away...
I just noticed this this morning. One of my hens seemed to be bleeding out of her butt, rather horribly. I immediately separated her from the others and cleaned her up, but don't know much to do beyond that. She might be defecating more than usual (although I'm not quite sure about that, it...
Please, guys. Any ideas? I'm terrified and horrified and don't know what to do. Any hints would be much appreciated. I added more cut up meat to their diet, hopefully that will help...
A couple nights ago, a raccoon got into the henhouse. Someone hadn't closed the door all the way, and one of the chickens turned up dead. When I noticed that some of the others had injuries, I attributed it to the raccoon as well. I separated them, and cleaned the wounds with hydrogen peroxide...
If they are only two weeks older, there's not that much of an age difference. You could wait until they're a little older and the difference doesn't show as much, but there will still be pecking, because there are new chickens invading the existing chickens space.
You know, this is just an...
Yep, that sounds like what I'm going to have to do. I don't have another place where the younger ones can be right now, so I guess they'll have to stay in the run while adults free range, like you said. I don't have a second door to the coop, but I could have my sister come with me and herd the...
I have 21 three-month-old chicks (20 pullets, one roo) that I have so far been keeping in a roomy cage in our garage, straw for bedding, and letting them out to roam for about an hour or so every evening. However, for the past two weeks or so, they've been getting very crowded, but I've been...
You don't understand - they're usually very active while freeranging, but these past two days, they just lay around. I won't even let them out today - there's no point. That's not normal, plus all the liquid pooping and the puking, and the fact that they look bloated.
Actually, I have no idea about the biting insects. We live in northeastern ohio, right up against some woods (the chicken coop is actually inside the trees, though still on our property), so probably there are a lot of insects, though I haven't actually seen any.
I didn't really check for mites...
Well, I let them free-range for about an hour - two hours before closing them in the coop every night, so I thought they'd get their grit from there. Otherwise, no.
I forgot to mention that I've been feeding them (maybe like once in three days) scraps of meat. I thought that would be enough protein. And no, the coop does not include the run, which is bigger than my bedroom. Seems to me to be plenty of space.
More info; Their poop is very runny, basically a...
Another thing I've noticed - all they do is drink and roost, and they drink much greater amounts than usual - which is odd, considering that the weather has cooled down.
I've felt their crop, and it's very squishy, which would make sense if its full of water.
I've been thinking that maybe its...
