    Large open wound with maggots

Happy to see it’s healing up well. I hope deworming is going well also.

    Nascent Iodine dosing for chickens?

I’m hoping someone might have some insight in to this, but I’m wanting to add nascent iodine to my girls “medicine cabinet.” Aside from helping sterilize water I’m familiar with it’s benefits in treating humans and animals for aspergillosis. That said, has anyone come across dosing information...

    Large open wound with maggots

Definitely Manuka. Manuka will be the only honey to contain high levels of methylglyoxal. The higher the level of MGO the better as well. It acts as such a good antibacterial treatment that it’s used staph infection, gun shot wounds, and even flesh eating bacteria.

    Large open wound with maggots

You should be using saline for regular cleaning after. Soap and water works, but it’s more likely to cause irritation in open wounds and won’t encourage healing. You could also apply Manuka honey around the sides of the wound and give her some to encourage internal health since you mentioned...

Saving water and cooling chickens with Pykrete.

It’s that time of the year and our feathered friends are frying. Not literally; well hopefully. While I’m newer to raising chickens I have been homesteading for some time and I do have a few useful tricks up my sleeve; one being Pykrete. The story of Pykrete is not all that old, but perhaps a...

    Dosing help with Tylosin PLEASE

They do, minus DE. Every time I’ve made a new batch with DE I’ve noticed gaping, coughing, and sneezing more. I think they’re just too sensitive to it. I was around them a good portion of the day today working on my barn and I didn’t notice much of anything. I installed a little misting fan and...

    Dosing help with Tylosin PLEASE

My wife and I have been sitting with them periodically over the past week and it’s literally so wild that I’ll spot the head shaking and gaping randomly and then spend :30 minutes with them and never see another sign. She swears she hasn’t seen them doing anything odd until tonight when the one...

    Dosing help with Tylosin PLEASE

Here are two photos of their housing and the most recent photo of them. I haven’t been able to catch any videos of them gaping, or head shaking. You can see their combs are lovely red, but usually mid morning I’ll check in to find them slightly pale. The coop has two electric vent fans pulling...

    Dosing help with Tylosin PLEASE

I have four one year old Barred Rock hens that I just finished five days of Denagard with. During the Denagard I noticed some improvements, but the issues are representing within two days. I have Tylosin 20mg tablets. How long should I wait before administering after Denagard, and how many...

    Questions about respiratory disease

I hope you have success with Denagard. I just started reading your threads in search of answers as I’m having fairly similar issues. I initially suspected gapeworm. Treated with Safeguard, but symptoms continued. Followed up with 5 days of Denagard and I thought things were getting better. While...

Insight needed on multiple hens gaping.

Well... I went to bed last night thinking my girls were doing better. This morning was a wake up call. No coughing, sneezing, mucus, etc, but one of the girls had a bloody nose, another I suspect she may have. So I’m concerned with ILT. All four were gaping and acting lethargic. My dominant hen...

    Greetings from NC

Whole heartedly agree. After the past year of caring for these girls we’ve debated going pescatarian. They have such big personalities and are honestly much smarter than I ever realized. Prior, I would’ve always considered myself a “dog person.” Now? 😅 You’re likely to catch me walking around...

Insight needed on multiple hens gaping.

Diatomaceous earth. It’s been used for ages as a natural dewormer. You need to specifically by “food grade.” Also makes a wonderful face mask 🥴 However, I understood how in theory it could be good in a dust bath.... but also that it could potentially be hazardous.

Insight needed on multiple hens gaping.

Good to know on the electrolytes. It’s been miserably hot here. We’ve been sitting in the mid 80s to low 90s for the past week. I have a fan in their run to keep flying insects down and keep them cool. Also have an ice maker and I’m giving them ice regularly. I’ve checked their ears, mouth, and...
