Hey guys, my brother is getting ready to put in his first coop and is having a problem figuring out where to locate it on his property. He lives in Alaska and the spot he wants to put the coop doesn't get much if any direct sunlight. In the summer months it will get up to a couple hours of...
Just 4, two Rhode Island Reds and two Buff Orpingtons. It was one of the Reds that is the culprit, she also seems to be taking the top teir in the pecking order.
I free range them so no run, I'm going to put up a temp run for a week or two and see how it goes. Your right on the heat it's just to hot in there. I am getting eggs in the coop though, I'm pretty sure it's just one gen that's laying outside of the coop.
I took the eggs and am putting up a temp fence around there coop as to keep them in and to start laying in. What do you think of the eggs, worth cracking a few open and seeing if they are any good to eat or should I just toss em due to the excessive heat?
So I have a few new hens that are roughly 5 months old. They started laying a week or two back, or so I thought, and I have stumbled upon a stash of 19 eggs with a young broody gen upon them. My question is would you keep the eggs? The only reason I'm concerned is I live in Southern Nevada and...
I allowed them to have free choice 24 hours a day on a 21% protein feed, with a handful or two of scratch every couple days then the last 10 days I switched to a 16% protein feed with a quart mason jar of cracked corn and 1 cup of scratch in the mornings to help with adding a bit of fat.
I harvested my Freedom Rangers this past weekend here are some results. Average Rooster weight 6.5lbs dressed with the largest weighing 7.5, Hen average was 6 with the largest at 6.5 and the smallest at 5. All in all Im pretty happy with the results :)
I live in Southern NV about an hour outside of Las Vegas so we have pretty mild winters. It's been getting down into mid 30's but mostly stayed around 40 for the low and mid 50's to mid 60's for the high. They spent the first 3 weeks in a brooder in the shed and then were moved to a small coop...
I am just getting ready to finish up my first batch of freedom Rangers as well as my first go at raising meat birds at all. It was really fun, I'll post my my results this weekend once I process and weigh them.
This is my first run of meat birds and I was wondering what you all use for a finisher. In the area I live they do not sell a "meat bird finisher" feed. I have read that you can use a laying feed crumble as long as it has a lower protein level. As of now I am using a 21% protein meat feed but...
