    Was it a hawk?

So...after almost four years without a predator death (a little free range when we are home, shut into coop at night, out in fenced pen (no roof but some cover) during the day - something got my biggest Barred Rock hen; I went out about midday to find her dead in the pen, breast down, two places...

Review by '' on item 'Barred Rock'

We added three 8 week old Barred Rock gals to our flock of 6 GL Wyandottes (12 weeks old, 5 hens and one roo); took our time and introduced them slowly over the course of a month. The Barred Rocks are still very cautious of the older birds and spend a fair amount of time on perches above the...

    Just flocking around...

Update: We've had five eggs so far - the first one broken, four nice little eggs...and one "wind egg" that looked like a deflated hot air balloon. No eggs at all today. But I think we're on our way..

    Aaack....diarrhea!

OK, finally found a picture - does look like it could be either an ascarid or a gizzard worm. But if we are seeing the parasite eggs in rather low numbers in a routine fecal float - is it still a possibility that the worm burden is not in proportion to the eggs we actually see? So I guess it's...

    Aaack....diarrhea!

Well, we've been sailing along ok -everyone completely healthy - and the Wyandotte gals are now almost 5 months old. Within the past four days I have been noticing the occasional loose, brown stool (more like a cow patty than a chicken turd). We finally identified the bird that's having the...

    Just flocking around...

Where does the time go? Seems like only yesterday I was posting and checking back every day or so looking for guidance in raising our first ever chicks - six Gold Lace Wyandottes, hatched the first week in April. This site has evidently been very good for me - I've been saying that all along -...

    Best Rooster Names?

Wyatt Orp - I love it!!! Our GL Wyandotte rooster is named Tommy after the rascally fella who enginered our coop and run. He was always telling me about his adventures with local gals while we were building, so when one of our chicks turned out to be a cockerel it seemed fitting.

    Black Lace Wyan-what??

After knocking around outside the run for a while he came and settled down by my feet. Gotta love that!

    Black Lace Wyan-what??

Well...the little flock is 4 months old this week and I'm sitting here watching them free-range for the first time. They are growing so fast and looking good! The one I initially had questions about is definitely a rooster, and started crowing regularly at 6 am a couple of weeks ago, for about...

    How To Raise A Rooster

Well, they are attracted to the color red; maybe we'd better all check our OPI color charts in our copious spare time and go for the green and turquoise shades...

    How To Raise A Rooster

LOL between gardening, horse activities and daily veterinary work, fingernails are not much of a problem here! Now if I paint my toenails, I'll watch out!

    How To Raise A Rooster

Getting a lot of info out of this thread because we got 6 gold lace Wyandottes this spring and one of them is a cockerel, which is ok - I've heard/read a lot about the pros and cons of having a rooster, and I don't mind as long as he behaves himself. I don't over-handle any of the chickens -...

    Black Lace Wyan-what??

Yup...that makes sense. So we don't have to change his name. Now if he just retains his sweet disposition....
