Hi guys, I am in Austin and need some advice, please. I am considering rehoming my two rescue Muscovies... it's a difficult thing to consider and I'm struggling to make up my mind. I found them abandoned over a year ago in Indiana and have brought them with me in our cross-country move but...

Support Group for Abused Duck Keepers

Hello, fellow sufferers. I, too, am a victim of a waterfowl, who's seemingly become psychotic overnight. I blame the weather and his hormones. Please keep me in your thoughts as I try to make it out of this mating season alive and with all my toes still attached.

Does my Muscovy drake want to mate or dominate?

What are the key differences between mating behavior and dominance behavior in Muscovies? He's almost a year old and this is his first mating season. I found him when he was about 5-6 weeks old, so he's not imprinted on me, but he's spent more time around me than with other ducks. He has a...

    Help me understand Muscovy behavior

Thank you all for your responses, and the gorgeous photos 😍 I became a duck owner almost by accident and my husband and I were quite unprepared for all that's involved but we are currently working towards a more ideal duck set up, including more girl ducks in the future. @Shadrach, I am jealous...

    Help me understand Muscovy behavior

Participants: 1. Duckarys, male, about 3.5 months old. Hand raised as a lone duck from about 5-6 weeks of age after being dumped. Starting to molt his juvenile feathers. 2. Liliana, female, age unknown but has a face mask and caruncles so presumably fully mature. May or may not be Duckarys's...

    Rescued Muscovy female losing feathers

Thank you, just managed to get the pills down her bill, it's very difficult to see her glottis. How do you soak their feet, logistically? I tried soaking her worst foot yesterday, ended up holding her tightly while sitting down with the dodgy foot held in my hand and submerged in a big mug of...

I should also add that the vet couldn't shed any light on her age but she is only a bit over 4 pounds! She's a tiny little thing and the vet said she's a bit thin. So I still don't know if she is just a small mature lady or a young woman.

    Rescued Muscovy female losing feathers

Post-vet update on Duck Two (official name Liliana): the bumblefoot is mild (the vet rated the severity 2/10), so we have antibiotics in tablet form... They are big chewables so I'm supposed to give them in her food but so far not much success. Also painkillers/antiinflammatories and I also have...

    Rescued Muscovy female losing feathers

I have another question about the new duck's behavior... I can't find an answer online and maybe I'm not searching for the right terms. She stands, lifts her head up towards the ceiling and rapidly opens and closes her bill, making a soft snapping sound. At the same time, she is making a soft...

I just got a good look at her feet and seems she bumblefoot in both. Ugh. Good thing we're seeing an exotics vet tomorrow morning.

Her wings are a really sad sight.

    Rescued Muscovy female losing feathers

Hi Ruth, I think you are right about the molting. I had a good look at her this morning and she has a face mask on, so she can't be the same age as Duck One so I think I rescued the Mamaduck and not the Sisterduck. And as she is a mature lady, I guess she's going through the molt. This...

    Rescued Muscovy female losing feathers

Hi all! I accidentally became an adoptive parent to two Muscovies, same clutch but I got them at different times. Someone dumped a Muscovy family with ~5-6 week old ducklings at a local pond back in August; one duckling had leg problems and couldn't walk, just sat waterlogged on the shore. I...
