    R.I.P. Sergeant Pepper

R.I.P. Sergeant Pepper, the bantam who would be king. You were a good rooster, all the ladies survived the hawk attack. Chili and Clove made it to the pen and Bay hid not 4 feet from your eviscerated remains. The hawk flew away when I disturbed his lunch. And then 4 crows finally arrived to...

Not an Emergency, but it is an unknown injury

I suppose it's possible, but we have a blind dog, so I try to keep anything pokey off the ground or flipped over so that it won't hurt the dog or the chickens. Tomorrow I'll try to inspect his thighs and body a little better. I didn't feel anything today, but if he has more I wonder if he had a...

Not an Emergency, but it is an unknown injury

No worries, thanks for the input! Took another look at him since he's defiantly standing on the deck after visiting the inside of the mother ship (what we refer to as "indoors"), and it's actually on the outside of his left leg, so there's no way it could have been his own spurs unless he got...

Not an Emergency, but it is an unknown injury

I tried to search information about roosters injuring themselves, but couldn't find anything... I trimmed my little bantam rooster's spurs today. It was overdue, but didn't seem too bad. He's been holding up one leg lately and I thought while I had him held down to trim his spurs I would check...

    Just Some Random Chicken Behaviors

Welcome to my microflock. I have two Leghorns about a year old, an old Golden Comet of indeterminate age, and a Black Cochin Rooster of indeterminate age. They get along well in their big backyard, with a few exceptions. Starting with the Roo and down through the pecking order they are Sergeant...

Normal for tails to droop in extreme heat?

Thanks! I love the ice block idea. I hadn't thought of that for cooling the surface they walk on. Yes, the coop is cooler than the outside, it is in deep shade in the afternoon/evening, so even though it doesn't have a solid breeze, it seems cooler. They hang out in deep shade under my trees...

Normal for tails to droop in extreme heat?

Northeast Arkansas has had heat indexes in the triple digits lately. The girls are doing well, all things considered. My Leghorns are doing better than my Golden Comets. But at night when they are trying to get comfortable in the heat, their tails droop. During the day I put a drippy hose in...

What in the sam hill am I looking at??

Update: I tried a variation of a home remedy for salpingitis posted by another member of this site. 3ml of Corid 3ml of Verm-X 3 amoxicillin tablets, crushed A single drop of oregano essential oil Roughly 1/2 Tablespoon of local honey About a teaspoon of water. I've given each...

What in the sam hill am I looking at??

That's what I'm afraid of. I found another post on here where supposedly someone cured their chicken with a concoction of antibiotic, oregano oil, liquid mineral, and honey. Figure I'll give it a try, but with baited breath.

What in the sam hill am I looking at??

One of my Golden Comets laid this thing. I have 2 Golden Comets and two new Leghorns. For months now only one of the Golden Comets has been laying, whereas previous they both had been every single day. I wasn't terribly worried, otherwise they both seem quite healthy and I thought one might be...

What in the sam hill am I looking at?

I keep antibiotics on hand for respiratory infections in the summer month since the dust gets them especially bad around that time. I'll try them on a round of that and see what happens. And I'll copy and paste this in the disease section, thanks for the suggestion.

What in the sam hill am I looking at?

I don't think it could be calcium deficiency. All their eggshells are super thick and they all chow down on the oyster grit every day.

What in the sam hill am I looking at?

Interesting, I'll research more on lash material, thanks. When you say infection, are you thinking anything specific, such as something confined to the reproductive tract?
