Need help... a few questions about safely treating for mites

For more details on my situation, including pictures and videos, check my other thread here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=6821670 I have three species of quail in three separate pens plus a flock of chickens in a fourth pen and recently one of my rare mountain quail...

Mountain quail died, the rest now losing feathers; mites? (Pics & Vid)

Just found another red bug crawling on the ground inside the quail pen...I caught it in a plastic cup and took a short video of it in case any mite-experts out there think they can ID it: www.vimeo.com/laramie1/redbug

Quote: The chickens seem to be okay...I'll notice them pecking at themselves from time to time but they don't seem too stressed. It's the mountain quail that are pecking/scratching at themselves a lot. My other quail are doing a bit of it as well but not as much. Quote: I looked up "red...

Dead mountain quail...what could have caused this?

Quote: really? Thats strange, I would have thought all the dampness and mud from the rain would hurt them rather than help them. Their outdoor run was uncovered before but whenever it rained hard and I didn't have a tarp over the top the ground inside the pen would turn to mud and large mud...

Dead mountain quail...what could have caused this?

I'm hoping that the necropsy on the 5th will provide some answers on the peritonitis/cause of death, still not really sure what to make of that... I went out this morning and found one of the quail laying on its side with its eyes closed, looking dead...I clapped my hands and made noise and it...

Mountain quail died, the rest now losing feathers; mites? (Pics & Vid)

Okay, now, if it *does* seem likely that I have mites, what should I do? I emptied out the straw from the mountain quail's coop and put down diatomaceous earth on/under the new straw and put some DE in their dust bath area too but if there's an active infestation that doesn't seem like it will...

Mountain quail died, the rest now losing feathers; mites? (Pics & Vid)

I'm trying to figure out if I have mites and, if so, what I should do about it. I'll separate this into two posts...this one will be about whether I have them or not. Recently one of my mountain quail died due to unknown causes...I'm having a necropsy done and that will hopefully reveal more...

Dead mountain quail...what could have caused this?

Quote: Did you find out for sure what happened to your hen? and a bit off topic but do your birds still lay after their first year of egg production? I ask because I've only raised mountain quail for 1 year and I'm wondering about why the necropsy showed that this hen was "all out" of eggs...

Dead mountain quail...what could have caused this?

Now, as for mites... I'm not at all sure that mites had anything to do with the hen's death (she didn't show any of the weak or slow symptoms prior to death and in fact seemed to be running around faster than usual) but I do think it may still be an issue with my mountain quail. I checked on...

Dead mountain quail...what could have caused this?

Okay, a few things...I'll cut this up into three posts so that it's hopefully easier to read. I went to the state vet today and gave them the bird; they said that there's only one person in the state that does these types of things (necropsies) and they're on vacation until next week. The bird...

Dead mountain quail...what could have caused this?

Quote: Wouldn't that sort of insecticide hurt them? If they're already vulnerable or infected by something (other than mites) I wouldn't want to make them potentially weaker by spraying them with that sort of thing... Would mites show up in a necropsy? And if they would but no mites are...

Dead mountain quail...what could have caused this?

Quote: When I was starting out last year I asked two other quail guys in the area about de-worming and they said they just feed their quail pumpkin once a year in the fall and that's all that's needed...they also suggested I avoid chemical deworming since it's more likely to cause problems...

Dead mountain quail...what could have caused this?

I have a colony of 6 mountain quail and this evening when I went out to feed them I found one of the females laying on the ground dead. No visible wounds or obvious cause of death, just very rigid and flopped over on the ground with a few loose feathers laying around her. Given her location...
