I'm excited that I now have my first 3 chicks hatched from both a rooster and a hen that I hatched out early last year. From that original hatch, I selected my favorite rooster and favorite hen and crossed the two. I only put 3 eggs in the incubator because of the constant changing weather...
I think so. I noticed the odd feathering about a month or so ago. I really like the looks of this guy, but I want to breed the best, so not sure if I should cull him from the group.
Well, heck! I collected the opposite of eggs apparently. I had collected eggs from both the GNH hen and the Red Star hen, thinking I was collecting the most from the GNH. Now, as I thought was possible, and confirmed by your post, I collected more of the Red Star hen eggs and less of the GNH...
Yeahhhhhh ... the system is now letting me post pictures!!! THANK YOU TO WHATEVER MODERATOR FIXED THIS.
So, here's the youngsters (all but one are German New Hampshires ... the other I believe is a GNH x Red Star). Drats ... now I see that the rotated pictures didn't rotate correctly. Argh!!
I've been wanting to upload pictures from my desktop (not my cell phone), and I've gone through all the tutorials and read all I can about picture posting, and yet for whatever reason there is NO link (the mountain with the sun) showing up at all on here. Like right now, from all I've read, I...
This is a fantastic idea!! It's getting over 100 degrees now here in Texas, and I feel bad for the chickens at times ... they don't have a way to escape the heat, even though they have shade. I'm going to set up a very small pool like this, and maybe even try the Walmart boot mat shown above...
I had my hen doing this 3-4 days ago, and she was in the hottest spot of the coop. I thought maybe she sat too long with the intent to lay an egg (outside her hen box), and got overheated. Brought her out into the main portion of the coop, offered her water, and blocked her from going back in...
I've been going through all the 'new member' stuff and can't figure out how to post pictures either. There is no mountain w/sun avatar/link to click, so I'm assuming I have to do much more posting before I can add any pics or even put a picture to my BYC avatar.
I think because I haven't visited BYC enough, and made enough posts, it doesn't allow me to upload photos. GRRRR!!! So, I guess I'll have to get busy and start visiting her much more. Will be so glad when I retire and have extra time in my life!
Matt,
When you talk about the tails being too high on the New Hampshires, are you referring to the hens? I've heard that a high tail on the NH roo should be high for a quality bird.
Also, I'm a new backyard breeder, but trying to breed the best New Hampshires I can ... of the German line...
So, I started out by buying a mature German New Hampshire rooster and hen (both were just under 2 years of age).
After trying to hatch out 3 batches of eggs in the incubator, and candling them at the appropriate time, none were fertile ... no chicks! This was crossing my roo with my GNH hen, a...
Thanks everyone for your great responses. No, i don't have a breeder lined up yet that i will be buying from, but have several in mind I've seen on here that have what I'm looking for. I will reach out to each of them right after Christmas. I'm looking to start with approx 15., or maybe 10 each...
Ok, now that I have my coop all set up, and I've been reading many great things on BYCs, I'm most anxious to purchase my first chicks. I'm in Texas, and seems breeders are more to the north for the German line New Hampshires .... soooooooo, when do most breeders start shipping chicks to buyers...
I just joined BYC today, after completing the construction of my chicken coop. I'm soooooooo ready to purchase my first German line New Hampshires chicks (or mature hens) ... so this is one of the threads I will be frequenting to get more info from all of you 'experts' for this breed!
