I had a Jersey Giant hen who preferred to roost on those rafters, so I figured it should work, but watching him struggle just to get up makes me wonder.
The Sussex-Dorking mix can't get up to the roost without assistance yet. I have left the ladder up, but yesterday they were roosting on the top rung again. I put them up. The boy ran from me and was trying to get up by himself. Right now he can fly about 2/3 of the way up, so about 8 feet...
I put all the female chicks on their new roost last night. This morning they went right back to their old area. We'll see what happens tonight.
Although the fact that they did find their way back might be a good sign.
If he's flaring at you, you're the one who will need to beat some sense into him. And with a child in the mix, I wouldn't risk it.
Mind you, if it's true aggression it can be done, but it's time and effort intensive. I've read the accounts, but for me a bird just isn't worth it. I rehomed mine...
That's the thing--she's not eating her own egg, ever. I get an egg a day from her, no problems. I don't have any golf balls, but I need to find something.
Well, she's definitely an egg eater. I put her in with two other girls, and when I collected her egg it was covered with yolk. No other trace of the egg itself.
Thanks. Yeah, I give them eggshell consistently. They eat it just fine, but any time I mention eggshell on here I get at least one person lecturing me on how it HAS to be oyster shell. I just got tired of the idiocy so I don't mention eggshell unless asked about it. SMH
I have 14 hens and I've been getting maybe 4-5 eggs per day. The birds have a high protein feed, they won't touch oyster shell, and they free range dawn to dusk.
I think I've got a double jeopardy situation, as the lead hen also hogs the nesting box. If any other hens come close she starts...
Both. The father passes the gold gene to his daughters, the mother passes the silver to her sons. (Correct me if I'm wrong). Two gold or two silver won't have sex linked chicks.
He got the gold from both parents.
