Thank you again, Armstrong Ranch! You've encouraged me to try my dog at what sounds like a really fun sport and a great "job" for him, and it's nice to meet someone who knows and loves rough collies! You summed up his personality well. Unfortunately, our summers are hot here in inland San...
Armstrong Ranch, thank you very much for your very informative, generous reply! My collie is now 20 months old, full grown, and the chickens...and subsequent chickens...sadly met their end by stray dog (saw it happen), complaining neighbors (had to give the rooster away) and, I think, racoons...
I agree. I did find a trainer in town who teaches dogs and their owners how to herd ducks, sheep and cattle. She conducts an instinct test when they are as young as 6 months but won't begin training them until 9 months to a year.
My collie has been helping me "herd" our two hens for about 2 months. He is 5 1/2 months old now. I simplly let them out, tell him to "go get her" and then "bring her here" and he does. He nips at the air and anticipates which way they'll go and rounds them up. If I leave him unsupervised...
Bear Foot Farm,
I have seen it in a picture on the Collie AKC page. I haven't done it or known anyone who has. It was your "chickens don't need rounding up they put themselves to bed" comment I was arguing with, because the FACT is, one of my hens prefers to stay outside and I have to carry...
Hi, I started this thread awhile back..I appreciate all the comments, most were very encouraging. I'm rather new to chickens and recently found out from a friend that they are practically comatose at night, so now I just go out and grab the non conformist off her perch as she sleeps and put her...
Okay, you must not be the person to ask, as I have seen many collie's rounding up chickens and ducks. If I free range my two hens, one of them prefers to stay outside in the geraniums all night, easy prey to racoons, possums and coyotes. The other one goes into the coop and her nest box as...
I have two hens and am thinking about adding another one or two....I am getting a rough collie puppy this fall. His breeder owned chickens and goats and he has a sweet temperment. Is it possible to train a rough collie pup to a) not kill chickens b) and round them up at night and herd them...
In my opinion, If you only let your chickens out during the day into the run (as in, 9 am to 4 pm, not near sunrise or sunset) and secure them in the coop at night, you will probably be okay. Is there an additional fence around your property? Motion sensor lights? Anything to make a predator...
Here is a photo of my 4 month old rooster. He is probably a mixed breed, but I can't find any photos that come close to him...I'd really appreciate any ideas on what breed or breeds he may be. Thank you!
