    Duck hatchery

Not sure if they have the breeds you seek, but we ordered our ducks from Holderread farm. All our ducklings arrived healthy. A little side note regarding Mallards, be sure to check with your state regarding if a permit is needed to have them. My state it is required. Best of luck with your...

    Cherished ducky moment

I wanted to take a moment and share a sweet story. First, some history on the ducks involved. A mallard drake named Chestnut and a khaki Campbell duck named Tokla. They were raised together since they were ducklings, but were different ages. We noticed almost immediately that they left their...

khaki campbell drake attacking 1 specific female duck

We rehome our aggressive breeding drakes as they do more harm than good. Hope separating him will chill him. Didn't ever work that well for us unless the ducks were not laying and it was too cold for the fella to care about breeding. Best wishes

    Opossum attacked our ducks

Just wanted to update as it has been sometime since we caught the opossum. He was the culprit as we have not had any issue since his capture. Since he also injured one of our ducks, if it were not him, I would assume the predator would return to finish the job and that did not happen. For...

    Dutch chicken

Thank you so much for the advice! Unfortunately, we only have one coop :hitDo you think it will be okay until we can build something in the spring? If not, our 4h leader offered to take one until Fair time this summer, so I guess that is what we'll have to do. Just to clarify, these were a...

    Dutch chicken

Okay, thanks. I wanted to double check that would still apply considering the earlobe differences. Hopefully, the three Roos can make it that long without too many issues :fl

    Dutch chicken

So as the chicks age, I am noticing some differences between the two light brown Roos. For example, one has less white on the ear lobes, but has longer looking tail feathers (he is a bit older as his comb is much more pronounced than the other). Eventually, we are rehoming one of the boys and I...

    Opossum attacked our ducks

Oh my goodness! I would have freaked! Yikes! I am sure you were shocked. I hope your opossums have enough sense to leave your birds alone! Best wishes to you and your flock! We will be making pen adjustments this spring with hopes to reduce predators. Thanks for the sympathy. I will share it...

    Opossum attacked our ducks

Good point and thank you! It happened some time overnight or early morning hours. The flock was grazing free range until dusk. My daughter put them in their pen (similar to a fenced yard), but they were not locked up. With that said, their huts were left open for them to go in and out. He...

    Opossum attacked our ducks

It truly is!! Thank you. He was very loved and will be missed terribly. My 16 year old daughter was in tears when she found him. He was one of the first ducks she used her own money to buy. Such a disappointment, but a hard lesson nevertheless. Lucky for us, a son of his hatched last year, so...

    Duck 'n goose house advice

Keep in mind the range in size is due to the bird size differences. Not sure what type of ducks or geese you have, but I thought I should clarify a bit. Geese are cleaner? Good to know! We may swap some of our ducks for geese ;)

    Opossum attacked our ducks

So, I am writing this for informational purposes. We have been doing lots of research on what may have been attacking our ducks. Why? Well, we just lost one of our beautiful saxony drakes and one of our silver Appleyard ducks was injured. We were shocked that our big boy (RIP Pinestone :hit)...

    Duck 'n goose house advice

Hi, I will pass on my understanding based off info I read by Dave Holderread. We don't have geese, so this is in regard to ducks only. Geese recommendations may differ. If the birds are housed ONLY at night 3-6 sq ft per duck of floor space will be good enough. If housed for longer durations...
