I don't have a fur license, (required to kill raccoons in the state of California) so we would have to release it or transport it. I will look into the coon cuffs though, thanks for that.
I'm devastated.. our favorite hen, Sylvia, was recently killed by the local raccoons. They tore through our chicken wire and got inside the run, then inside the coop. What hurts the most is that raccoons only kill chickens for sport.. they don't actually eat them.
We patched the hole and my...
Please note that most of these reviews are 3-8 years old. Feed producers, especially those that are larger companies, change their product over time. I was also looking for more information on this feed, but unless someone who uses it currently posts something regarding their experience, I'm...
What would you suggest? I recently started trying to do this, as was suggested to me (I have three adult hens and the pullets are 14weeks) and the alpha is picking and pecking at the pullets in the morning. The other two girls are fine with the pullets, but the head of the pecking order just...
I'm new to raising chicks, but what I was told by multiple people, is to wait until they are fully feathered. Then around 10pm, take the pullets out to the hen house and drop them in. When they all wake up in the morning, it should be like they were always there.
Good luck with your girls!
My biggest piece of advice would be to get another bucket! LOL! I over provide for my girls, they each have the opportunity to lay in their own special box. :P If your girls are being semi-broody and not leaving the container you use, at least long enough for another girl to lay, your pullet...
Just like everyone else.. I'm super grateful for the poop pix.. oh yeah.. totally love saying that. :P It wasn't overly warm here.. so I'm just going to keep an eye out. Her poor little butt just looks almost raw when she runs away after squirting it everywhere. Yogurt therapy is definitely in...
That is the same feed I was giving my girls. Ask if they have the feed with the oyster shell inside the pellet. It doesn't have cracked corn in the mixture, but you can always mix the pellets with scratch if it's important to you that they get snacks. :) The pellets look exactly the same (so...
I noticed that all my girls were picking out the oyster shell and dropping it into the sand. I had a huge pile (almost 2 cups!!) of oyster shell sitting under my automatic feeder. In my mind, this explained why the girls weren't getting enough calcium in their diet. I switched to a pellet that...
We used white metal shelving on the bottom of our run, to keep our predators that dig.. it has worked wonderfully for our girls so that they can keep their dirt floor also. I'm assuming the pine shavings are to help with warmth.. as we keep pine shavings inside our coop and sand in our run. -- I...
I'm somewhat new to this too, but I let my girls decide. I don't live where it gets extraordinarily cold, so I never lock them in their coop. Depending on how cold/warm it is, decides how much ventilation I use in their coop. To make myself feel better, I bought some thick, clear painters...
Thanks for all your warm words. We truly appreciate the love and support that BYC brings to us.
Our local feed and supply has chicks right now. I think we're pretty set on the idea of getting 2 little girls and letting my kids watch them grow from babies. I can't think of a reason not to at...
Yesterday, we suddenly lost one of our girls. Our PBR was running around healthy (even hopped the fence into my neighbors yard!) and right before they went in to coop, (we let them free range before bed) my daughter said Stella collapsed on the ground. I wrapped her up in a towel, held her...
The pump is so the water gets circulated. The heater only heats the water around it, so by circulating the water, everything gets warmed and no top layer freezing occurs. :)
During the summer, you don't need either the pump or the heater. They are simply winter precautions. :)
