Comment by 'lhamid' in article 'Vent Gleet aka Nasty Chicken Butt'

I had a hen with BAD vent gleet. I used Monistat (I bought drugstore brand Miconizole). Get the one for 7 day treatment with 7 disposable applicators (not suppositories). Fill applicator about 1/2 full. Gently ease into vent (eggs come out of there so the applicator isn't a problem). Inject the...

Whats the best chickens for eggs?

I have 2 sex link hens, they are laying machines. I also have Buff Orps, they are good layers too except they go broody a lot. Marans are also pretty good layers. I like Easter Eggers too for the blue/green eggs.

Sally, a while back you gave me permission to post a link to your article on vent gleeet on my web page. SO GLAD I DID. One of my favorite hens had a messy butt and some scabbing bleeding around her vent. I cleaned her up and used Vetericyn and she seemed okay. Then I noticed it again and red...

Does any one use ivermectin in chickens ?

Kathy, I agree, Lice are extremely hard to treat. Mites are even worse. One treatment will not control lice and mites, and you won't see instant results. A second treatment 7-10 days after the first is necessary to break the life cycle. And it is a combination of sanitation and treatment. For...

Does any one use ivermectin in chickens ?

Ivermectin has been used ORALLY in children over 5 years old to treat head lice. Yes, ORALLY. It is safe and effective. You can certainly eat the eggs. Only caution is certain breeds of dogs (some collies and mixes, you can Google it) may be allergic to Ivermectin so you may want to exercise...

What is the strangest thing your chickens ate? Mine just ate crawfish Monica and aligator tail

I had plastic coops and I was moving them. All these rats came running out. Under one of the coops was a nest of baby rats (pinkies). The chickens grabbed them like they were peanuts. They were tearing baby rats out of each others beaks. It was horrifying.

    Breed Recommendations for a newbie

I LOVE the Buff Orps. Big friendly birds, and good winter layers too. Only downside is they tend to go broody. I also have a place in my heart for the Easter Eggers. They are pretty good fliers though. The Orps are too big to get airborne.

Broiler Meat Birds: To Brood Or Not To Brood

I have never raised Cornish but I did raise Freedom Rangers and they do act like 'normal' chickens, also put on weight fast. They eat like pigs and poop like horses. I am now raising Poulet Bleu, relatives of the famous French Bresse. They are not hybrids, they breed true. My flock of breeders...

Review by '' on item 'Northern California Poulet Bleu'

I have CA Poulet Bleu. Yes they are very good layers. My roosters are all very gentle, as are the hens. They are good foragers. I have some very persistent broody hens. I have not let them hatch chicks so I can't comment on their mothering abilities but I suspect they will be good moms as they...

Dealing with bird mites; my home, my hens, my itchyness!

These was a long discussion on Marans Chickens. This may help. I use Ivermectin for worms, mites and lice (directions here: http://sweeth2o.us/health.html) and recently used the frontline on 8 birds I took from someone that was moving. I used a drop on the back of the neck on each bird...

Chicken Flesh Eating Disease? Warning-Graphic pics

Its possible she had what is called Fly Strike. A small wound attracts flies and they lay eggs. The maggots hatch quickly and feed on the host. I had a Silkie rooster that had it really bad. One day he was fine and the next day he was crawling with maggots. He was eaten down to the bone in...

    poor chickens!

I am in the Sacramento Valley (CA). It gets HOT here. I put misters in all my pens. I bought an Orbit brand starter kit from WalMart a couple of years ago, got extras heads and more 1/2" pvc from Lowes. It really helps and was pretty cheap and very easy. Some of my birds actually stand under it...

    My chickens killed a mockingbird-normal????

Chickens will attack/eat snails, slugs, rodents, reptiles, you name it. They love those big green tomatoe hornworms. Those big Jeruselem crickets (some people call them potato bugs) are also a big favorite. I uncovered a rat's nest with baby rats in it. The girls made short work of it. I also...
