As far as antibiotics, I do not even know what the options are for chickens. Most of my animal care knowledge is of larger farm animals and I kinda doubt a shot of penicillin is the route to take.
Luckily we don't seem to have many flies at all this year, yet. We have horses and goats so they will come eventually.
I can't thank you all enough for the advice. It's a comfort to know I had a good start on her care and I don't feel guilty or selfish for giving her a chance anymore. The last...
I got her put away by herself right now with water and food. She started eating immediately. Haven't seen her drink yet. All wounds are at the edges of the bald spot she now has on her back. To cover it I would imagine I'd have to wrap it all the way around her? Would it be best to go over or...
A fox attacked my favorite girl minutes after my husband and dog stepped back inside.
Hubby shot the fox. It's dead. As we were discussing what needs to be done with bodies Dolly gets up and walks off!
She has feather loss and a good bite to her back with 5-6 punctures. I've sprayed with...
I put golf balls in the nests for 2-3 weeks and we sold off the half stack of hay that was their favorite hiding grounds and they can't get on top of this year's cutting so I'm hoping I've got them trained now...
Thats the main reason I'm asking what I should expect so I know how hard I need to...
Glad to hear!
I don't have a run and I hate to keep them shut up as some of my girls like to wait til late afternoon so hidden eggs is my main concern. They have a nice big horse stall we converted for them so they do have a decent amount of space and I've been keeping them shut up more just to...
My 6 girls are 7 or 8 months old now. I've been getting eggs for about a month now and earlier this week I got a daily high of 5 eggs. Right now I typically get 4 but there are days I only get 3, usually followed by a double hiker.
I have 2 Wyandottes, 2 Brahmas (I think one isn't laying quite...
I have 6 birds and I'm getting 3-4 eggs a day. I've gotten 2 double yokers thus far.
Most days when I get 3 its because I am having issues getting them to lay exclusively in the boxes and they are hiding them around the barn.
I am in central Iowa and it has been rather warm. Winter seemed to run long and then we jumped right into mid to high 90's.
I haven't added anything to their water or fermented their feed. They are free range 90% of the time, tho I have been keeping them cooped up more lately just to get them...
Simple curiosity here, but sometimes when my son (4.5 yr old) runs at the chickens (because he is a limitless ball of energy) they squat down and kinda spread their wings out a bit. The rest of the time they just run out of his way. Curious as to why they squat like that??
Honestly I am...
I am pretty sure she is laying. I don't plan to make any culls this first year, but I can see her being the first to go down the road as the flock grows, if natural selection doesn't take care of this for me. It's not a decision I am going to rush, more just a gut feeling than anything. As it is...
One of my hens, a Light Brahma, has ALWAYS had poo butt. I had to clean her vent repeatedly as a chick and now that she is 7 mo old she STILL always has some poo butt issues. Until recently I hadn't thought it was that bad, as I hadn't really given her a close inspection but last week I gave all...
