I was away from home yesterday and left the hens inside rather than let them free-range. However, one must have slept in my attractive-nuisance chick brooder coop the night before, because at midnight last night I heard something attacking. (I use a cheap baby monitor for coop audio at night)...
Thanks! I miss his daddy - he sadly lost a battle with a bobcat when I was at the grocery store one day, but from the quantity of feathers he put up a good fight.
😭
Buff Orpingtons are generally very sweet - the rooster in my avatar picture is a Buffie cross from 4 generations in my flock. All of them have been extremely docile toward people but very good at flock guarding.
I'm done with Barred Rock roosters.
Every 'mean' rooster I've ever had was a Barred Rock (and I've had chickens for going on 60 years). And in my experience they only get worse - never better - once they start going after people.
Get ANY other breed and you'll probably be fine.
Wow, that's one weird chicken! Even the ones I've had that were totally lethargic and wouldn't eat anything else would eat butter balls.
Back to prying open her beak, I guess?
I have a removable panel in the A-frame that serves as a door (you can see it sitting toward the left end on the picture). It could also be hinged at the top or side, but mine just fits tightly into the space and can be removed completely.
The ends of the A-frame let in a good amount of air...
No, I didn't know about that one. I'm on Backyard Herds, but only one person has responded to my posts about this in 3 weeks, and their advice was to put her down and get some healthy goats. :-(
I just joined Goat Spot, so I'm going to post there and see if I can get some help. She's still...
I got 2 bags of mite-infested grain from Coastal.
Not just mites, but also black weevils. :-(
Both types crawling all inside both bags. Both bags were Coastal's house Country Companion brand - none were in the Purina Layena I bought the same day.
Yes, she gets probiotics, but her issues are way past that.
Two weeks ago she had another bad bout of bloat, and then seemed to recover until I gave them all Positive Pellet dewormer. It wasn't as bad as the full-blown bloat session, but a week later she suddenly wasn't able to stand. I took...
I used 1" poultry wire covered by 2"x4" welded wire. The combo is cheaper than hardware cloth and just as effective.

Did you find any C&D antitoxin? I have a 4-month-old goat who's had a bad gut since I got her at 10 days old (from a commercial dairy that gave her a bad start). I've tried this entire time to get antitoxin, but as far as I can tell there's none to be had anywhere in the country.
Even OSU vet...
I built 2 of these 4 years ago - one A-frame and one 'box' style. They both work great, but over time the box style has been easier to access and clean, because it has a real hinged door.
I used scrap metal roofing for the box coop and a 4'x8' Harbor Freight tarp for the roost area on the...
