    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

I happened to see we had a spare ice cube tray and decided to give it a try with the fermented chick starter (Scratch & Peck) and it's working great for my 2 week old chicks. The nice part is that they can't really step in the fermented feed because of the tray cube structure, so less poo and...

    FERMENTED FEEDS...anyone using them?

This might be a silly request, but would some of you mind posting pics of what type of dish/feeder you use to "serve" fermented feed to your chickens? I know not to put it in a metal feeder, and I assume it's best fed fresh each day and not a self-dispensing type like you would regular feed.

Where is best place to buy baby chicks this time of year

Oh my goodness! I wish there had been a closer hatchery that carried the breeds my girls wanted. Why does the west coast not have hatcheries? I thought about ordering from Dunlap's in Idaho, but they didn't have any of the breeds we'd decided on. I lucked out when I called USPS. I got a...

Where is best place to buy baby chicks this time of year

I'm on the West Coast in WA and ordered from Meyer and even though the label said Priority 2 day, the chicks that were hatched and shipped Monday did not arrive until Thursday. Totally not Meyer's fault though! 1 was DOA, and we lost 7 of the 30 ordered--most likely the stress of the long...

Uh oh, is this a sign of Cocci? Poo picture

Meyer hatchery. Is there anything preventative I should do just in case?

Uh oh, is this a sign of Cocci? Poo picture

Just noticed this on the paper towels in the brooder from my 5 day old chicks. I've been changing the paper towels 2x a day to try to keep it clean and cleaning all their feeding dishes too :( What did I do wrong? And, if it is cocci, what do I do now?

5 chicks dead and counting :(

Thank you. That's interesting--I wondered if they might not be as hearty as the other breeds we bought since the majority of the ones who died were sussex. The other chicks seem to be doing pretty well.

5 chicks dead and counting :(

I don't have an auto-off turn OFF heating pad, so in a panic 2 days before the chicks came, I ordered the heating plate. The MHP is working so well (even though I have to manually turn it back on every time it turns off, even during night), that I wish I could return the plate and just buy the...

5 chicks dead and counting :(

It looks like it is about 82 on the other side. Is that too warm? I did make a mama heating pad like Blooie showed in one of the threads I used, so I'll just use that. I ordered one of the Premier1 heating plates, but it hasn't arrived yet.

5 chicks dead and counting :(

I did go down to our True Value store and pick up some Sav A Chick electrolytes and probiotics. The little faverolle took it well, and then after she revived a bit, I was able to finger peck at the food and get her to eat some. She's running around, chirping and pecking and happy. The little...

5 chicks dead and counting :(

The brooder is about 4 feet long. The heating lamp is on one end, and the food and water are on the other end. I'm in the Northwest, and it's not been very warm here recently, so ambient temp where they are house has tended to be around 75-78. Is that too warm?

5 chicks dead and counting :(

I will give the sugar water a try. I tried nutri drench yesterday, should I try it again today?. The brooder has been between 90-95 degrees, I try not to let it go below 90.

5 chicks dead and counting :(

Our 30 chicks from the hatchery arrived yesterday (Thursday) morning. They were hatched Monday. One was DOA, a speckled sussex. We immediately fed them GroGel, and offered food (fermented organic chick starter) + water with a splash of ACV. 4-5 of them had pasty butt, which we have been...

PIC Dying Chick, please help :(

Thank you. I've been diluting it according to the instructions on the bottle. I also have a waterer with just water available for them as well. Sadly, the little chick in the photo above just died. I'm hoping she is the last one. We had 30 shipped, and have lost a total of 3 (one during...
