Help with diagnosis please - head feather loss.

Hi @baguette did you ever figure out what condition your chicken had? Mine are going through what I think is the same thing and I've been searching high and low and for an answer and treatment. Thanks!

Losing feathers, bald heads and necks, with scaly dry skin. Is this Favus or something else?

Unfortunately our cochin still has a bald head and the white scaliness doesn't seem to be clearing up, even though we've been rubbing miconazole on her head for about a month. We just went on vacation for a couple days and it's worse now that we're back, so it's hard to say if the miconazole is...

Looking for a forever home for 3 of the sweetest bantam hens you'll ever meet! Near Santa Barbara, C

Are you an animal lover looking to care for 3 adorable bantam hens? 1 white Silkie bantam hen (broody) 1 buff Brahma bantam hen (not broody) 1 black and white mottled Cochin bantam hen (the broodiest!) All are a little over a year old and laying. These girls need a little extra TLC...

    Getting ready to lay??

Agree with song of joy's comment, once they start to "squat" when you go to pick them up is when they're close to laying. Ours started a few days after that.

Can you feed your Chickens Meat?

My avian vet suggests cat food (with chicken is ok!) when they are moulting or need a little extra protein. I just don't think you're supposed to feed that longterm because of the added vitamins meant for cats. Mealworms are great protein too and they love them! I order 3,000 at a time from...

Losing feathers, bald heads and necks, with scaly dry skin. Is this Favus or something else?

Thanks for the reply marneypoo, super helpful info! I'm glad we're both thinking the same thing- favus. We've continued treating her over this past week and the tiny white "hairs" are a little longer, and there's less flaking, but she's still pretty bald. I wonder what I could do to speed up her...

Losing feathers, bald heads and necks, with scaly dry skin. Is this Favus or something else?

About a month ago, my three bantam chickens began developing dry flakey patches on their heads and bodies, their feathers fell out on their head and neck, and feathers on their bodies began falling out in clumps. From the research I did online, I thought it was favus, or ringworm, and began...

    mites, mites, mites

We sprayed down the coop with permectrin II about a month ago a few times when we were dealing with northern fowl mite. Now I think they have depluming mite and scaly leg/face mites, as you cannot really see the tiny things, just their dirt left on the feather shafts, the white crusty scales...

    mites, mites, mites

Does anyone know how often and for how long you have to use Ivermectin for it to work on mites? My three bantams have lately been dealing with what I think is depluming mite and scaly leg/face mite, and I've already given three separate doses of Ivermectin Pour On for Cattle 5mg, 5 days apart...

Just a heads up to those of your reading this response- Tea Tree oil does work great to kill mites in the home and on people, but it is poisonous to pets, especially cats and birds. Actually many essential oils are. Best to do your research before trying any essential oil on pets, even though...

Thanks BayBay Peepers, that's really helpful. So we'll spray down the coop again with permethrin, and then keep up maintenance. I'm so irritated with these little buggers I might just do once a week for a while, which hopefully isn't overkill. Do you suggest treating the birds with a few...
