Chickens have almost completely stopped laying!

Our flock is all Orpingtons, about 10 mature hens (3-4 years old), one Big Papa buff Orpington roo and three not-quite mature roos that are being rehomed soon. We had three successful hatches over the summer and right now have 5 babies that hatched mid-September. On August 21, there was a...

    Dried Poop/Pasty Butt??

Question on a related topic: I have a chick who is about 4 days old, went out to check on them this morning and found her in the nest rather than out in the run with Mama, unable to walk and eyes half closed. Ran her into the house and discovered pasty butt, got her cleaned off with warm water...

First-time broody has rolled eggs out of the nest--why?

Hey, just wanted to let you all know: I had given up on the hatch being viable and went outside on Tuesday evening to remove her remaining four eggs and give her a new batch to see if she would continue to set, when lo and behold, chicks! Three of them! All are doing well--thanks for the advice.

First-time broody has rolled eggs out of the nest--why?

Lost another egg today--this one was not viable and literally exploded under our poor broody hen. She took the shell out of the nest but I had to remove and clean the remaining four eggs as well as scrub out and change the bedding in the box. I used water slightly warmer than the eggs and tried...

First-time broody has rolled eggs out of the nest--why?

Mary, our broody coop is a converted dog house (arch door cut in the back for people access) with its own completely enclosed 6-foot run attached. She is in full view of the flock when she comes out to eat and drink but also has food and water close to the nest inside, as I have been worried she...

First-time broody has rolled eggs out of the nest--why?

Need some advice, guys: we just came home from being away a few days and our Orpington hen, a first-time broody, appears to have rolled three of the ten eggs she was setting out of the nest and into her enclosed run, breaking one open in the process. Two of the three appear to have been viable...

Chicks almost 3 weeks old--can anyone tell me which are hens and which are roos by their tail feathe

We have seven Orpington (daddy is buff, mamas are both buff and black) chicks that are 18 days old, and I have definitely separated them into two camps. Two of the chicks have a defined "duck's tail" of well-defined feathers that points straight out from their tail, while five of them have less...

Whats the best chicken and age to butcher and eat?

Hey, I have a batch of seven chicks that are now 5 weeks old, all Orpingtons (Mamas are black or buff, Papa is buff) and am beginning to think that the majority of them are male, unlike our previous hatches. It's very hard to find homes for roos here, and I am wondering if the males can be...
