I have a goofy Easter Egger who acted like that. Eventually she mellowed out, a bit. She no longer responds to everything she encounters (humans! the outside! food!) with screams of hysterical terror. But she's still a bit of a freak. I'm convinced she got badly jostled in shipping and that...
I attribute this to my chickens' tiny little brains. My girls would rather fuss over who gets to use the "good" nest than actually use any of the empty nest boxes. The thing is, which box is the "good" box shifts constantly. But whichever one it is that week, they all want to use it.
Goofballs.
Uncanny. You could be describing my birds, both easter eggers. One screams her fool head off whenever anyone is laying. The other one lays stealth eggs.
We don't wash the eggs, and we store them on the counter. If there's any mess on the eggs, we wipe it off with a damp paper towel.
However, we only have four hens, so we're not dealing with dozens of eggs at a time.
My chicken come running if they think we have treats. Otherwise they view us with great suspicion. You never know. One day we might stop being vegetarians. A chicken has to be careful in this big scary world.
Seriously, I don't understand how people cuddle chickens. Our hens do not want hugs...
